JoRee LaFrance is Apsáalooke and comes from the Greasy Mouth clan and is a child of Ties in the Bundle clan. Her Apsáalooke name is Iichiinmáatchilash/Fortunate with Horses and she is a seventh generation direct descendant from Chief Pretty Eagle, the last principle chief of the Apsáalooke Nation. She comes from the Crow Reservation located in southcentral Montana but currently resides in Tucson, AZ. She graduated in June 2017 from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in Earth Sciences and Native American Studies and is now a doctoral student at the University of Arizona in the Department of Environmental Sciences. JoRee is dedicated to protecting the Apsáalooke way of life, the right to clean water, and the right to safe, nourishing spaces for Apsáalooke youth. Although she is away from home, JoRee continues to find ways to work with and empower her people. In this episode JoRee reflects on her upbringing on the Crow Reservation while painting the picture of the heart of the land, culture and history of the Apsáalooke. She shares what inspires her studies and future work alongside and on behalf of her community while also speaking to the unique sovereignty of Native nations. JoRee also elevates the interconnectedness of the destruction of the land with the violence against women; she encourages us to view laws and policies through a holistic lens. She also shares an intimate reflection on the evolution of her identity as a Native woman in mainstream society and how she has navigated tensions of cultural appropriation and ignorance. In addition to her work with the environment she's an agent of change for the community with previous projects with Bethany Yellowtail a fashion designer and fellow member of the Crow (Apsaalooke) &amp; Northern Cheyenne (Tsetsehestahese &amp; So'taeo'o) Nations. JoRee continues to inspire, lead and build an intergenerational legacy we all should take note of. Episode 32: The Undeniable Pulse of the Land, People, Culture and Healing featuring JoRee LaFrance

In the episode, the IRC team speaks with JoRee LaFrance (Apsáalooke). She is a PhD student in the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona. She comes from the Crow Reservation located in southeastern Montana. Her Apsáalooke name is Iichiinmaaáatchilash (Fortunate with Horses) and she comes from the Greasy Mouth clan and is a child of Ties in the Bundle clan. She uses the intersection of her background in earth sciences and Native American studies to focus on water quality issues on her reservation.JoRee's PhD research aims to understand the contaminant behavior in the Indigenous Food, Energy, Water Security and Sovereignty (Indige-FEWSS) nexus in the Little Bighorn River watershed. More specifically, she will address the contaminant concentration-discharge relationship in the river to further determine any implications and to characterize exposure routes unique to Apsáalooke people.The episode begins with Ellen BigSam (Salish) singing a Snqaqaá. The Nqaqaá was performed in anticipation of the departure of a war or hunting party. In the Nqaqaá a small group of people sang the Snqaqaá from teepee to teepee as the war or hunting party made their preparations for departure. By the time the singers had completed the circle the warriors had departed silently.JoRee and the IRC Team continue by discussing the importance of our tribal communities and landscapes as a source of inspiration for our research and academic aspirations. The discussion centers on how our time away from our tribal communities helps to shape the research we envision while attaining academic knowledge. The conversation shifts to the importance of communicating our academic knowledge back to our Tribal Communities. The second half episode begins with Grant Bull Tail (Apsáalooke). During the creation of humankind and the Earth, it is said in some version of the creation story that the Creator sang this song. JoRee and the IRC Team continue the discussion on the purpose of writing in Western academics. The discussion center on advice for current and emerging Indigenous scholars on how to make our academic writing be a purposeful product for our respective Tribal communities. I come from the Apsáalooke (Crow) nation and from the Greasy Mouth clan and I am a child of Ties in the Bundle clan. I was born in Crow Agency, MT and was raised in Wyola, MT in the Mighty Few district. My parents are Lissa Whiteclay and Andre LaFrance. On my maternal side of the family, I am a Whiteclay, Tobacco, Horn and Bear Claw. On my paternal side, I come from the LaFrance, Knows His Gun, Good Eagle, and Spang families. My full last name is White Clay On The Forehead and it comes from my great-great-great grandpa who used white clay as his medicine when he went to battle. I am the 7th generation of Chief Pretty Eagle, the last principal chief of the Apsáalooke Nation and one of the first five Apsáalooke delegation members to travel to Washington, D.C. I graduated in June 2017 from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in Earth Sciences and Native American Studies. I currently reside in Tucson, AZ where I expect to complete my PhD in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Arizona.  Picture 1: Professional headshot (PC: Sings In The Timber Photography).
