John Schreiner and Kurt Flack talk elk and why there's a Downtown Chicago chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Schreiner is the president of the Downtown Chicago chapter of RMEF. Kurt is the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation regional director for southern Wisconsin and Illinois. We touch on many topics: the meaning of elk (John has a wonderful turn of phrase connecting places where elk are and wildness), some basics of the appeal of elk, some discussion on how close elk are to Illinois and whether it will ever be viable to try to reestablish them. And they had thoughts (ones I agreed with) on the hunter killing the red deer mistaken for elk along the Fox River last fall. I find the discussion of the meaning of elk and their possible reintroduction a useful way to consider the meaning of modern wilderness and wildlife. And Schreiner had the details for the RMEF banquet Friday night at Gibsons Steakhouse.
