Welcome to a special end of week episode of the Paint and Paper podcast (007) where we get to talk to Joshua Walsh! He is the Co-Executive Producer of the new Erwin brothers Movie – “I Can Only Imagine”  If you are not familiar with Josh or the Erwin Brothers, maybe one of these movies will ring a bell:  October Baby Mom’s Night Out WoodLawn  What does a movie have to do with painting or decorating your home? It’s because of our tagline. Our tagline is ‘we help you love the house you live in’. It was actually my Incredible Wife’s idea while we were on the “Love Like you mean it cruise”, with family life radio that the idea took place. How to paint is nice, wallpapering is great, refinishing cabinets is awesome, it supports our way of life and our way of living, and what we do. But you should be going to the next-steps. If we’re really gonna help people love the house they live in, then we need to-be talking about how they live in their house and some of the things–what you do, what you don’t do, just ways to make the house better. This is a family movie, one that is great for all family members. Josh shared “I think it actually kind of ties in with our home and our living.” Past Films October Baby. October Baby was the story about this woman named Gianna Jessen. It was the story of this girl that was an abortion survivor. That story really follows this girl named Hannah through her life and finding out that the health issues that she experienced throughout her entire life are tied back to the fact that she was not only adopted which she finds out later in life but also saved from an abortion. Her kind of dealing with that and going on a road trip on a journey to find her birth mother. The Erwin brothers went on to produce a studio film with Sony named Moms’ Night Out, it was kind of our big movie. We went from being Indie film directors to working with a studio and making a film. Moms’ Night Out starred Trace Adkins who’s also in I Can Only Imagine which comes out March 15, 2018. The movie had Trace Adkins, Sean Astin from Lord of the Rings, Patricia Heaton from Everyone Loves Raymond, and then Sarah Drew from Grey’s Anatomy. Jon called it a Hallmark card to his wife. It was just this story about a family and these women, these moms, it was kind of this adventure-comedy, family comedy about them really just trying to get a night out and things going wrong. It’s almost like one of those old road trip comedies where things keep going wrong. But at the end of it, wraps up with a very sweet message about motherhood and the importance of moms in all the roles, stay-at-home moms, and moms have to work. It’s a beautiful celebration of moms. It packs a really heavy message with some laughs. Then Woodlawn which we feel is a more important film which was a true story about a football player named Tony Nathan in Birmingham, Alabama where we’re based out of. It’s a story we grew up hearing. It focused on this player who was really the first African-American superstar to come out of Alabama, sports athlete from this tiny little school named Woodlawn. Themes The story really deals with integration, the tensions of integration, and that intersecting with the Jesus movement of the 70s. What happens to this team in Birmingham, Alabama in the Woodlawn campus that really started something that changed a lot of the way that Alabama treated African-American people. The rise of this character that then many others would follow after him. It really deals with the Jesus movement, racial tension, and football. It was based off a story they heard growing up through their whole life. The dad would always talk about how he came into this campus, he shared the gospel to this team that was divided, whites and blacks not talking to each other, not dealing well with each other, came together, unified together on this common thing that they had together which was based-in Christ and it really changed. They have this amazing peace and they went on to play the biggest high school football game in Alabama history. I think it’s the top three in high school football history. It was neat to look back and say, “What binds us, what gets us past these things is Christ.” The kids from one of the most torn areas in America were able to come together, all with their common bond based on Christ, and they bonded and it inspired a city. That was the film Woodlawn. It was a big football, epic film, Their Newest Movie Now I Can Only Imagine which is out this Friday, March 16, (2018), starring Dennis Quaid and Trace Adkins. It’s another story about a young man who felt called to something, to sing, and use his gift to glorify God. The story is the bestselling, most played Christian song of all time, I Can Only Imagine. That was made famous by Bart Millard and MercyMe. He wrote it and their band has been around now for 20 years touring. They’ve done very well. They’ve had 21 hits since that time. But not a lot of people know the story, they know the song. It’s an amazing story about a father and a son. His father was this abusive, sad man who was just very hard on Bart growing up, and very physically abusive to him, and very torn man. Bart hated him and had a very rocky relationship with him. At a very early age, Bart came to Christ and later on you see through the movie, Bart started taking him places with singing. His dad then gets this terminal diagnosis of cancer and really has this conversion by listening to Bart’s music over the radio and comes to Christ himself. The movie takes up kind of that minute, you deal with the relationship between Bart and his dad, and they have such a beautiful restoration. In Bart’s world, he saw a man that he hated and he was afraid of turn to a man that he loved and respected and wanted to become like, and became one of the most godly man he knew. It’s a very hopeful story of restoration. That’s the story of I Can Only Imagine. Bart wrote this song thinking about his dad and it’s about his dad. Not a lot of people knew that. It went on and really blew up and they became a pretty successful band since then. The song has gone on triple platinum, infamous in Christian and secular charts. It blew up. The Takeaway When asking about the movie  “Bart, what is I Can Only Imagine? What’s that feeling, the takeaway?” He said, “It’s a rush of hope.” And so is the movie. You watch the movie and there’s difficult things in the movie but we don’t go too deep where you lose people but it really is a rush of hope. It’s a story about someone who had a dream, God fulfilling it through him, an ability, God using someone’s gift to bring him places, using pain for good. There’s no arguing it’s a true story. Either you can be a critique but this happened. Bart is the best advocate of that story because he says, “Hey, this is what I can tell you. My dad went from this monster to a Godly-loving father that I wanted to emulate.” I think that’s the gospel and that’s this film. It’s a neat story, and there’s music, and there’s the whole coming-of-age, and kind of a music movies and all that wrapped in spare. Dennis Quaid does an incredible performance. I believe he even said that he hasn’t played such a dynamic art portfolio. It’s just a powerful performance. You have to watch it yourself to see. It’s amazing. It really showed the importance of who we have speaking into our lives, in this case, it was a teacher for high school that really saw the ability and what he could do, and did what they could to encourage and bring that out for him to get better. For any teachers out there, go see it, and you’ll know the importance of what teaching you do for school. Release Date The film comes out 3/16, March 16. For Christians, it should be something that’s a memorable number to remember. If you go to icanonlyimagine.com, put in your zip code, it’ll pull up all the theaters around you. I encourage you to go out, bring a group of friends, bring someone that you think could use the message, bring a youth group. This movie will help a lot of different people on different levels. It’s very important for us, opening weekend, that this movie is supported. That’s a busy weekend. But this film, I feel like, like the song, could have potential by really impacting a lot of people. Our world, as we know, we need these kinds of messages out in the marketplace. We believe this is a special time for the film to come out. We really have seen impact before the film come out, we really believe that it will have an impact when it comes out to the general audience. Here is a link to the song.
