This episode is special. I began this recording in the summer of 2021 with the reading, and added a special component, some of my looming questions to Solange. You can read her letter to her teenage self by Teen Vogue here. I am a long-standing fan of Solange and Saint Heron, and it feels important to start this podcast with why she is such a huge inspiration for me. Her artistic trajectory and commitment to the arts is probably the most validating for the progression of my own work, and my ideas around the spaces I want to create with new gen. Also, if you haven't listened to the Saint Heron compilation album, you should. This month, we kick off the new year with an exploration of language in our feature, “Way With Words”. How do we preserve our most endangered languages? How does a dialect become a language? Do labels like “Womxn”, “LGBTQIA”, “people of color” and “Latinx” empower or hold people back? What happens when a command of written and verbal language no longer separates robots from humans?
