I had been stuck for years. In my relationships, in my job, with how I thought about myself. As a highly successful academician, I’m sure very few on the outside could see this, but for me it was present every day. Around a milestone birthday I decided something had to change – I didn’t know how many years I had left but I really didn’t want to spend any more of them feeling what I was dwelling in. Thoughts like: I had a job I had to keep because that’s what was expected. That I had to give up who I was or who I’d been. That my relationships could never get better – they’d maxed out on “good times.” In my earlier days I had dabbled in dance, acting, playing the piano, writing and being fun and carefree. Where had that person gone?? Inspired by my daughter, I signed up for an adult acting class at our local community theater. Once that class ended, I enrolled in an Improv Class – and am proud to say that I have graduated after completing all 5 levels during the past two years. This new adventure opened my mind up to the fact that I could make my life what I wanted it to be. I was in control and I knew I had one bigger leap to take, and that was to start my own business. In July 2020, Christner Strategies was born. I love to teach people and therefore my business revolves around individual coaching and then providing workshops on a variety of topics to all kinds of teams. My favorite topic is one I do with my colleague on how techniques learned in improv can be applied very effectively in the workplace environment to increase teamwork and improve communication. Interview with Jennifer Christner

Dr. Jennifer Christner MD, Dean of the School of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, joins Innovators to talk about how to build medical schools and healthcare systems around a more diverse generation of physicians and healthcare professionals. With her creativity in approaching the learning process balanced with her understanding of the requirements of documenting the quality of our programs, Dr. Christner has been recognized for work in faculty development, as well as teaching and research. She has mentored students, residents, and fellows in clinical practice and research. A pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine, Dr. Christner became the Dean of Baylor's School of Medicine in 2015 after serving as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education at State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University. Prior to SUNY Upstate, Dr. Christner held academic leadership positions at the University of Toledo and the University of Michigan. She earned her MD from the University of Toledo and a Bachelor's degree from Ohio State University. Baylor College of Medicine: Preparing a More Diverse Generation of Doctors (with Dr. Jennifer Christner, Dean of the School of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine)

Dr. Jennifer Christner is the Dean of School of Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. Over the last 20 years, she has been devoted to leadership and mentorship of physicians across a number of prestigious universities, from an Associate Pediatric Residency Director at the University of Toledo to an Assistant Dean at the University of Michigan to the Associate Dean at SUNY Upstate. She has pursued her interests in improving quality in medical education and medical education research. As a testament to her passion for students and teaching, she has been awarded teacher of the year multiple times. Today, Dr. Christner teaches us how to strike the balance between being confident yet not cocky. How to recognize our talents and celebrate our successes, but to also never get too big for ourselves. And, she reminds us that sometimes the biggest lessons don’t just come from our mentors, but unexpectedly from those around us. So, take the time to get to know not only your patients, but the cafeteria staff, the maintenance workers, and all those around you that make the experience possible. And most important, learn the names of everyone around you, it will go a long way!  Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Learn how to advocate for yourself. Do not beat yourself down and allow other people to dictate the narrative of your life. No one is going to look out for you better than yourself. 2. Be confident, but not cocky. Know the difference between the two and manage that tension well. 3. Know the names of those around you. These relationships will be invaluable in many practical ways.
