Director Todd Solondz made waves in 1995 with the debut of his independent film Welcome to the Dollhouse which is set in a world all too familiar world (the suburbs) but from a perspective never before explored– from the eyes of a dorky lonely tween girl named Dawn Weiner. Bullied for being ugly and  desperate for the attention of a hot high school musician, Dawn’s world is sad, funny, and feels true to life– making the film a realistic exploration of the sexuality and alienation that awaits everyone on the other side of puberty. A precursor to the mumble-cringe at-school indie genre that spurred titles like Napoleon Dynamite and Ghost World, the film also serves as indisputable inspiration for more modern works including Eighth Grade and PEN15.
