In dieser Interviewfolge des TolkCast haben wir gleich zwei Gäste, die von uns für Euch ausgefragt wurden: Bill Fliss ist Tolkien Archivar an der Marquette University und Sarah Schaefer Kunsthistorikerin an der University of Wisconsin. Beide sind die Kuratoren der spannenden Ausstellung „Tolkien: The Art of the Manuscript“ in Milwaukee, USA.  Im Interview erzählen Bill und Sarah, wie das Ausstellungsprojekt entstanden ist, welche Ideen dabei am Werk waren und wie die Ausstellung aufgebaut ist. Sie geben Einblick in die Herausforderung, die es mit sich bringt, über die Rechte am Objekt, aber nicht an dessen Inhalt zu verfügen, und verraten uns ihre Lieblingsexponate.  Und weil Bills Arbeit als Tolkien Archivar außerhalb seiner Tätigkeit als Kurator dieser Ausstellung natürlich ebenfalls sehr spannend ist, haben wir ihn für Euch noch ein weiteres Mal interviewt. It finally happened: The Tolkien Heads traveled all the way to Milwaukee to meet with Bill Fliss, the archivist at Marquette University’s Special Collections whose purview includes the J. R. R. Tolkien Collection, a veritable smial of Tolkien’s original manuscripts, sketches, and other fantastic mathoms. In our interview, Bill told us all about what sort of things are held in the collection, what advancements are on the horizon for management of the archive, and what the public is able to see. Bill gave us some fascinating insights into the light that the collection sheds on the genesis and evolution of Tolkien’s ideas, and we learned a lot about what changes were made to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings before and after publication.
