Throughout history artists have known that music provides benefits for both the creator and the listener. It can affect individuals in positive ways by inducing both psychological and physiological healing. This is especially true in the senior community.    Sing For Your Seniors is a nonprofit built around the mission of enriching lives through the universal language of music. They bring professional artists to the communities of seniors in need...to entertain them, to foster inter-generational connection, and most especially to create shared joy.   Jackie Vanderbeck is the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of SFYS. From her great grandmother, whom she lovingly called grandma Dee Dee, she realized the enormous therapeutic value of music for seniors, especially those who are showing signs of withdrawal. And so in Grandma Dee Dee’s honor and memory she started SFYS in 2005 as a one-person a cappella hour at the Village Adult Day Center in New York’s West Village. But it has now grown into a much bigger organization, and today Jackie joins me in this Spotlight episode to talk about that journey.    Last summer, she invited me to participate in one of their sessions at the Actors Fund Home in New Jersey. SING FOR YOUR SENIORS with Founder & Producing Artistic Director Jackie Vanderbeck (Spotlight)

Jackie Vanderbeck is an actor, writer and the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Sing For Your Seniors (SFYS), a New York-based non-profit organization. SFYS’s mission is to enrich lives through the universal language of music by bringing professional artists to the communities of seniors in need to entertain, foster connection and create shared joy. Proudly focusing its service to low-income senior communities, LGBTQ+ elders, veterans and those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, SFYS is a five-time recipient of the Quality of Life grant from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Before graduating in the founding class of the Natomas Charter School – Performing and Fine Arts Academy in Sacramento, Jackie spent her summers interning in Outreach and Education for California Music Theatre, where she cultivated her passion for ensuring theatre be accessible to all. Jackie went on to study performing arts at the University of Cincinnati – College Conservatory of Music, receiving her BFA in Musical Theatre and the Ross Award for Excellence. Some of Jackie’s theatre credits include the Denver Center Theatre Company, Pacific Conservatory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Broadway Sacramento - Music Circus, Shawnee Playhouse and two concert tours with the Tokyo Philharmonic in Japan. As a writer, Jackie’s first play with music, “THAW,” with co-creator, George Walker, received two workshops at the Pacific Conservatory Theatre. Jackie is a member of Actors Equity Association and the Dramatists Guild of America. Jackie Vanderbeck is more than a gifted performer, she was born to use music as a tool to bring joy to people's lives, however momentary. Jackie left her hometown in Sacramento, California and moved to New York City, in the nexus of musical theater, to chase a dream. In the daily grind of auditioning and performing, Jackie felt disconnected from her craft. And in building her new life, she felt a void — the warmth from her grandparents who influenced her love for music. She searched hard for volunteer opportunities involving the elderly, but couldn't find one she could fully commit to. And so she started her own.From singing acapella songs at a senior home on her own, Jackie is now growing Sing For Your Seniors, a nonprofit organization with 150 volunteer professional singers who connect and enrich the lives of the elderly at senior centers, hospitals and respite care facilities in New York City and beyond.This show is produced by Hueman Group Media.
