The big macro-economic surprise in 2021 is INFLATION!  The latest CPI-U year-over-year inflation print for the 12 months ending May 2021 is 5%. Regardless of whether the rise in general prices – influenced by the sectors of energy, lumber, or used cars – has been lumpy or not, it does appear that most of us are witnessing pockets of inflation in our lives.  And, inflation is contagious, inflation in one area often spills over into others.  This current inflation appears to be an about-face from the decade of deflationary forces that languished through the decade prior to COVID.  The 2010s were characterized by slow growth, low inflation, and low-interest rates.  To combat the persistent slow and low economy, central banks around the world were unrelenting in their efforts to stimulate the world’s economy, which largely just led to rising asset prices.  Fast forward through one pandemic and one year later, and BOOM! An explosion in consumer demand and a disruption in supply.  Have we entered a new paradigm of demand and exceeding supply, or will we return to the old, oversupplied economy that we are all so used to?  In other words, is the inflation that we are witnessing transitory or persistent?In this episode, we break this down.  What is happening with inflation, what does it mean to portfolios, how best to hedge against inflation, and is this inflation transient or persistent?

Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Christopher Burton: ● Physical Medicine and Rehab is his specialty, and he’s also a physician coach. ● He signed up from courses and programs looking to learn the basics of setting up his private practice, such as how to market, how to fire the correct staff, etc. That path led him to getting involved in local medical societies. He was later introduced to the idea of coaching, which isn’t that common in the medicine industry. ● His mantra: “You don't have to know everything, you just have to know where to look it up.” The Most Frequent “But’s”: ● Time:Doctors are afraid they don’t have time. Truth is, it’s always perfect time to get started because as long as you keep putting things off, you’ll have less time to pursue the things you actually care about. It’s not a waste of time because it’s part of your journey. ● No idea of where to start: There's an information overload. But there are only a couple of things you need to know. What do you know about that could benefit others, and who are those that would benefit from that information. How to Use creativity to Thrive in Business? ● As physicians, and because of our training, we are used to putting out ideas aside and focus only on what we were trained to do. But it’s important to be open to a full experience. ● We went to school for one thing, but it doesn't mean that's the only thing we can do with it. We gotta be able to think outside the box a little bit. You can also learn from someone you know or someone who’s doing something that you want to do. ● To thrive, all you have to do is be willing to put yourself out there and share what you know for the people you want to teach. You DO know enough. There will always be people who will know less in certain topics than you do. Help them. ● Pick a topic that you know about and enjoy. Entrepreneurial, vaccines, biology, etc. Start running that topic on a piece of paper, write down around it. Everything you know and you can think about that topic. If you are passionate about it, it will be so easy… it’s not a struggle anymore. Remember: You can step out of the medical field. ● You don’t have to do it solo. Get a good team around you. A coach is the first one you must think about. Someone to guide you and share experience with you.
