This episode features Amitabh Kumar, Founder of Social Media Matters and Justin Davis, CEO of Spectrum Labs. Spectrum Labs has partnered with Amitabh and his team to build and distribute a model that will use AI to fight caste discrimination online. Social Media Matters is a group of feminists dedicated to creating safe online spaces. Their initiatives fight back against toxic online behaviors like cyberbullying and fake news, and support digital safety efforts in a variety of sectors including dating, gaming, and social media. Our conversation focuses on cyberbullying as it applies to caste discrimination.India’s caste system is a social hierarchy that divides Hindus into rigid groups ranked by “purity”. There are 4 main castes, as well as a group of social outliers, the “Untouchables”, who make up over one-sixth of India’s population. Using AI to Fight Caste Discrimination Online ft. Amitabh Kumar, Founder of Social Media Matters & Justin Davis, CEO of Spectrum Labs

Amitabh Kumar lives and works in Bangalore. He is a designer/artist and has worked as a part of the Sarai Media Lab where he researched and made comics, programmed events, designed books and co-curated an experimental art space. He is faculty in the Srishti School of Art and Design and Technology and is an initiating member of the Delhi based comics ensemble, The Pao Collective. He has been painting murals across India for a couple of years now and today we are here to talk more about Murals and his work.Your work has a distinct grungy look. How did you arrive at this styling?You have done a lot of murals around different cities in India. Can you tell us what a Mural is and what is it’s importance?Can you tell about your any specific artwork which created a high impact on the audience / viewer? Why and how?Do murals always have to tell stories?What is the importance of initiating a dialogue with strangers when you have worked on a mural?
