Khateebah Rabhi Bisla delivers the khutbah for The Women's Mosque of America on November 22nd, 2019. In her inspiring khutbah, she opens up vulnerably from her perspective as a therapist about her first experience reaching out for help as a young woman after the death of her father. Rabhi courageously shares her personal journey navigating through cultural taboos and stigma surrounding mental health, and she sheds light on the Islamic precedent for seeking help and shura (counsel) -- especially in regard to the Prophet Muhammad's (p) "Year of Grief" after his wife Khadijah and his uncle died. In her own unique style, Rabhi walks us through her journey - step by step - recounting all the different emotions, fears, and doubts one might face before they ever consider asking for help. Bio: Rabhi Bisla is an international trauma expert and therapist born from Afghani, Punjabi and Kashmiri sprinkles. After her Papa died when she was eight, she knew she had to devote her life to trauma to honor the life of her Sufi scholar father. For over a decade, Rabhi has often been one of few Muslim or South Asian women of color on mental health tables and conferencing, advocating for nuances of care in order to bring light to taboo topics. Because she has witnessed how easy it is for one bad therapist to turn someone away from therapy or healing altogether, she wants to hold other clinicians to high standards of care for the Muslim community. She also educates people on how to be mindful of choosing the best therapist in order to receive the best care possible. Rabhi recently returned from launching programs in the Middle East, with a specific focus on intergenerational messaging on shame, vulnerability, and mourning. Her work with rescued Daesh survivors in Iraq includes her unique method of using art, film, and photography from a community lens for healing. Rabhi has launched a free mental health platform called Ummah Therapy that talks about hard topics in a free, accessible way, and it includes conversations with religious leaders, trauma experts, and community members. Ummah Therapy also houses a podcast called Chasing Noor that talks about the light inside us, around us, and in the ancestors who came before us. Rabhi believes that all it takes is one conversation to open up the path for healing.

She also discusses how cultural expectations and myths can prevent us from seeking the help we need, and how the example of the Prophet Muhammad (p) demonstrates how we should approach asking for help.
