November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Today's Gab with the Gurus Show will educate you about this disease. Lung cancer remains the leading  cancer killer among both men and women in the United States, with heavy smokers being at highest risk. Dr. Roger Maxfield of ColumbiaDoctors Eastside will educate you about symptoms of lung cancer, how to prevent and treat it and how to support a loved one, who's come down with this disease. You'll learn about worrisome symptoms, which include pain in the chest, shoulder, or back, persistent  coughing, shortness of breath, changes in the voice, coughing up  blood, weight loss, phlegm, or mucus, and recurrent bronchitis or pneumonia. It's important to focus on these symptoms, because signs of lung cancer can take years to develop and  it may not appear until the disease is at advanced stages. Dr. Maxfield's areas of clinical interest are asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and interventional bronchoscopy including ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), brachytherapy (endobronchial radiotherapy), argon plasma coagulation (non-contact electrocautery), and stent insertion.  He is conducting clinical trials of bronchoscopic lung volume reduction for emphysema and performs evaluations for lung volume reduction surgery.  He also sees patients with asbestos exposure and other occupational lung diseases.  He is a NIOSH certified B-reader for interpreting chest x-rays for pneumoconiosis.
