In this episode, I talk with Beth Wagner, Claire Mancuso, Natalia Norzagaray, and Parham Daghighi, all MSW students at the University of Texas - Austin and members of the group FED UP, which is organizing for paid social work internships. This episode is Part 2 of a two-part series on social work students organizing for paid internships. They talk about how they created FED UP and how they organize, including how they frame their approach and strategies they use. They also talk about resistance they have faced and how they’ve responded. The FED UP members share their guiding principles and organizational structure, which are really interesting and can serve as models for others. We break down statements often said from social work administrators and faculty, such as, “Didn’t you know what you were getting into?” and “but you’re getting an educational experience.” The members discuss some of the challenges of unpaid internships for them and their peers, with a focus on how unpaid internships negatively impact students’ well-being. We also draw connections to issues of equity in the larger social work profession and how social work is devalued in society. I hope this conversation inspires you to action. Paid Social Work Internships Part 2 FED UP – Beth Wagner, Claire Mancuso, Natalia Norzagaray & Parham Daghighi

Beth is the true animal lover of Chicago. Born in Michigan to outdoorsy parents, her family moved across from the Lincoln Park Zoo when she was a young girl, and she would go there all the time, eventually working there in her 20's on their traveling bus. After studying animal behavior in college, and starting her own catering business Park West Catering, eventually she got into the traveling zoo business herself, with her friends always asking her to bring her many pets by to birthday parties and other events. Still very active in the exotic animal space, today Beth brings her creatures by to festivals, libraries, schools, special-ed classes, and nursing homes all over Chicago. As a wife to local BBQ pitmaster, Willie Wagner, she also helps run the restaurant and live music space, Honky Tonq BBQ, in Pilsen and is very active in the community, hosting weddings and other events, at a local convent and garden that she now owns. Beth Brust, the mother of an Asperger's child, coauthored Quirky, Yes—Hopeless, No: Practical Tips to Help Your Child with Asperger's Syndrome Be More Socially Accepted. While Brust offers a parent's perspective, Dr. Cynthia La Brie Norall provides an expert's point of view. Together, they synthesize years of training Asperger's kids at their after-school "Friends Club." Fashioned after Dr. Spock's guidebook for parents, the book serves as a sort of bible for parents and educators dealing with children on the autism spectrum. Just three takeaways:  "Aspies" can, in fact, learn people skills and become more socially aware. But this growth requires practice. Breaking down skills into small steps sets them up for success. Looking people in the eye can be very distracting and stressful for Asperger's kids, causing others to misinterpret their behavior as rude or disinterested. Bullying is prevalent among children with Asperger's, so learning strategies for stopping it is essential.
