An Unusual Gathering has become an unpredictable talk show. Often our guests come back as a co-host, bringing a friend with them. Then, together, we explore new topics: with those we travel in time and space — today, it's "space" — literally.If you have followed us for a while you know that we had the pleasure of hosting several conversations with Dr. Ron Ross. He is well known in the cybersecurity industry, a NIST fellow, an Army Veteran, West Point Graduate Class 1973, and, as he highlights quite often, a passionate NASCAR and NASA fan. These are essential clues; stay with us a bit longer.Here is why.When we asked Ron to join us for an episode, he barely thought about it. He said that he might just have the right person: a long-time friend, a fellow Army Veteran and West Point Graduate Class 1973; an Experimental Test Pilot, NASA Astronaut, Director of Safety and Mission Assurance, Manager of Space Shuttle Program and Orbiter Project at NASA.Apart from the fact that he didn't race in NASCAR — his guest was the right person indeed: Colonel US Army (Ret.) William "Bill" McArthur, who logged 224 days and 22 hours in space during three space shuttle missions and one long-duration stay at the International Space Station.So let's get to the point. From there, we travel through time through the US Army and all the way up into space.Ron and Bill tell us stories from when they entered West Point together in July 1969, and a few days later, watched Apollo 11 land the first crew on the Moon, and as Ron likes to mention, "AND brought them back to Earth safely."We got captured by Bill's story of perseverance as he applied several times to be part of the NASA Astronaut Program before succeeding.
