In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I had the pleasure of interviewing Sydney Barrister, Talitha Fishburn.  I found Talitha thanks to the world of Instagram and have followed her daily adventures for a while so it was truly lovely to meet her in person and learn so much more about her life in and outside of law! Talitha these days spends her time as a busy commercial Barrister, practicing out of Sydney and while we chatted about her experience in this role, it was Talitha’s life outside of the law that had me intrigued- from orchestras to choirs to community- I sense Talitha has found her ‘balance’ between her high pressure day job and creative hobbies and passions. I was again reminded in this conversation of the importance of finding your people- whether that be through an orchestra or choir- and why community can truly build happiness for us all.   In this interview, Talitha and I also chatted about-  If Talitha was not a lawyer she would have followed a media or musical path. The correlation between law and the performing arts. Neuroscience and how music activates certain areas of the brain. Talitha grew up in 90 minutes south of Sydney and loved growing up in the country side. Talitha’s journey into law and her experience of attending the University of Sydney and staying on campus. The importance of friendships, connections and relationships both in and outside of the law. Talitha completed the first year of her summer clerkship in Hong Kong. Talitha started her career in capital market law and then moved into the litigation space for her second year of law. Talitha took a secondment to Westpac and gained a huge amount of confidence through this process. Talitha explains the advantage of working in non-legal sectors of business. The sustainability (or perhaps unsustainability) of working long hours and Talitha’s perspective on how this affects your physical and mental health. Talitha talks about the correlation between big hours and the rates of burnout. How Talitha became a Barrister and her experience of the process. Talitha now practices mainly in Civil and Commercial areas of law. Statistics of Women on the Bar and why all of this matters.
