PhD researcher Lauren Beatty and sports historian Dr Fiona Skillen join the Common Good Podcast to talk about a new study that charts the development in women's golf in Scotland over the past four decades. The pair touch on their findings and how they can be used in a practical context, before exploring how the women's game began (and busting a few myths along the way). They also discuss what golf must do to attract more female players.

This episode Geoff is joined by the co-editors of a special isssue of the BSSH’s journal Sport in History on women’s sport. Fiona and Carol talk about the state of research into women’s sport now, and how it has developed since their previous special issue on the subject in 2010.  They also give us a sneak preview of some of the articles that they have gathered together, including a ground-breaking collaboration between previous podcast guests Prof Matt Taylor and Dr Raf Nicholson on women’s sport and leisure during World War 2. It’s a feisty discussion with a lot of passion for the subject shown from all sides! Dr Carol Osborne was first woman Chair of BSSH from 2011 – 2014, and senior lecturer at Leeds Beckett University on the Sport &amp; Social Sciences programme until 2019, when the course closed.  Her research interests broadly turn on sports history and heritage, with a particular interest in women’s sport, gender relations in sport, and climbing history. Her most recent publications include ‘long view’ chapters in the ‘Routledge Handbook of Global Sport on Field Hockey’ and ‘The Palgrave Handbook of Sport, Politics and Harm’ on mountaineering. She is a Research Associate with Sporting Heritage CIC and is currently editing another special edition for Sport in History, entitled ‘Sporting Heritage: theory and practice’ due 2021.   Dr Fiona Skillen is a Senior Lecturer in History within the Department of Social Science in the Glasgow School for Business and Society at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. Her research interests concern modern history, in particular aspects of sport, gender, health and changes in popular culture. She is particularly interested in the influence which dominant discourses concerning gender and modernity had on women’s sport. She has published widely in these areas. She has also published on research methods, in particular oral history and the use of archives. Having worked previously in the heritage sector Fiona also has an interest in research in heritage and tourism, she is currently developing work in the area of sports heritage. She is a Past Chair of the British Society of Sport History and vice-chair of Women’s History Scotland. In 2014 she was named as a BBC Woman Expert for her research on women’s sport history. She is an editor for the ‘International Journal for the History of Sport’. She is currently supervising a number of PhD students working in the areas of sport history, sports volunteering, sports tourism and heritage. Fiona is currently Principal Investigator for VOLPOWER a two-year EU Commission funded project which brings together 7 EU partners to look at how volunteering in sport and arts organisations can contribute to youth interaction, integration and empowerment.
