EPISODE 50:  KT50-Aunt-Gertrude’s-Hope-Chest GRATITUDE IN A MINUTE WITH KAREN TREIGER Growing up, there was a simple old, pine chest that sat in a corner of our basement, collecting dust.  When I was in high school I asked my mom what it was.  “Oh, that’s Aunt Gertrude’s Hope Chest.  Women filled Chest like that with beautiful linen and bedsheets for when they got married,” My mom told me. “If I refinish the chest, can I have it? I asked.  “Sure,” my mom said.  So, I sanded and varnished and it came out beautiful.  Today, the Hope Chest sits in my den as a coffee table.  The meaning of Hope for Aunt Gertrude takes on a new flavor as I learn more about her life.  She was born in Germany in 1887. The youngest of 10 Staadecker children.  My great-grandfather Victor Staadecker brought her to Seattle in 1905 when Gertrude was only 18.  She must have started her new life in America full of hope.  She did get to use her Hope Chest – she married Emil Mayer in 1920, at the age of 33.  She lived in Seattle her whole life and died in 1972.  Her memory lives on in my home.
