Audio/visual artist Richie Culver first realised he could make art at a rave afterparty when he picked up a book of Nan Golding’s photography. He rose to popular attention in recent years firstly in the art world after a work was featured in the Tate Modern and when the piece Did U Cum Yet, a comment about social media, went viral during the pandemic. His debut album, I Was Born By The Sea, mixes spoken word with experimental electronics and has echoes of his birth city of Hull’s Throbbing Gristle. He tells us about his background and his very different beginnings working in caravan factories in Hull to his current life as an artist and father. His work provokes strong reactions with viewers and we talk about this and the impact that this has on his work. We also talk about his new body of work of bold text pieces in which he is trying to move away from the working class tag which has been associated with him and the reasons behind this.

We visited Richie in his studio in West London earlier this year and had a really interesting, fun and at times intimate chat about his life and practice and how he got to where he is today. We cover a lot of stuff in the conversation from addiction, being a self taught artists and parenthood to Bruce Lee, pigeon fancying, mumble rap and caravans. We also delve into Richie's past: growing up in Hull, living in Ibiza as a young raver and his time making art from newspapers he found in a New York crack house.We really enjoyed this one and there's a bit of a rolling start so bare with it as it takes a minute or so to really kick in - I just really didn't want to cut any out.
