GP039: Telehealth with Krysta Wark and Phil Sheppard

Welcome to our Sixth Episode!! We absolutely loved recording this episode with Krysta. We not only learned a ton of knowledge from her, but we were also able to tap into our souls and have an incredibly open conversation about a variety of topics. Krysta’s answer to her “WHY” and her motivation to do what she does is probably one of the best “WHYs” we have heard on the podcast. She truly opened up to us, and it was an incredible experience to see her passion for her work and her normal life activities. Mr. Brodi took this episode extremely motivating, and after the recording session, he realized that the field of physiotherapy is one of his true callings in life, work-wise. Krysta Wark is a Canadian Physiotherapist passionate about helping provide health care to those with limited access. She traveled to rural India for a physiotherapy placement and was instantly hooked on Global Health work. Her curiosity for more information manifested itself in the creation of a free-access podcast called the “Global Physio Podcast” which can be found in our resources tab.  Outline We started this podcast by exploring into Krysta’s childhood in Campbell River BC, and her early exposure to the outdoors with a lot of camping and skiing. Krysta reveals how this childhood set her up for her future life and her deep seeded love for the earth and nature. Early in her life, Krysta was introduced to figure skating; however, she quickly transitioned to cross country skiing, where she raced competitively in high school at a national level. It was during one of these competitions were she got injured, and she saw a physiotherapist that planted a seed in her mind about that field of study.  After high school, Kryta went to UBC to take Cell and Developmental Biology, but she realized that she was a social person, and she didn’t like being alone in the lab. After graduation, Krysta decided to travel to South America to try and figure out what to do next in life. She asked a lot of world travelers how they found out what to do in life, and this helped her decide on partaking in physiotherapy.  Pelvic health is Krysta’s passion and her specialty. When she was 17, she fell and broke her wrist along with severely hurting her tailbone. After this injury she developed a urinary incontinence dysfunction, which basically means that Krysta suffered from involuntary loss of large or small amounts of urine while performing normal tasks like running, coughing or sneezing. She went to her physician with the problem in hand, and he immediately assumed that she had a lot of sexual partners which was not the case, so she stopped inquiring about her issue and just dealt with it for the next 8-9 years. During physiotherapy schooling, she had a lecture about pelvic health which brought up the topic of urinary incontinence, and she knew at that exact moment that she wanted to study pelvic health to help other people with the same issue she suffered for a number of years.   Krysta defines how your pelvic area regulates the following 4 main functions:    Your pelvic muscles hold the organs inside of you and prevents them from falling out Your bladder functions are controlled by your pelvic floor muscles For females, your pelvic floor impacts your sexual health with regards to achieving an orgasm, and if penetration is part of sexual intercourse, being able to tolerate penetration pain free. For males, your pelvic health helps you achieve an erection and maintain one during intercourse, along with controlling ejaculation and allowing you to ejaculate fully and not prematurely  Your pelvic floor also helps your bowel health with regards to not leaking feces, and avoiding being constipated or having an irritable bowel syndrome    After defining what your pelvic floor controls and regulates, Krysta talks about the main causes of pelvic floor dysfunctions and how to get treated. She then mentions how in order to evaluate the pelvic floor, internal vaginal or rectal examination is needed to reach the pelvis and feel all the muscles in the area. This will allow her to see if one’s pelvic floor muscles are tight, loose, or un-coordinated, thus allowing her to treat the individual correctly and efficiently.  After talking about pelvic health, we turn to Krysta’s work with global health and her podcast: “Global Physio Podcast”. The reason why Krysta started her podcast was because she wanted to gain more knowledge about global health in order for her to make a positive impact in this world. One of her main goals was to help people who do not have access to health care, and she quickly realized that she can perform global health work in her own community. She talked about how to get involved with global health, and the key core competencies that will help anyone be more efficient while performing global health work.   We asked Krysta what her “WHY” was, and her answer was probably the best answer we have heard in this podcast. She pin pointed her “WHY” to one specific moment when she was in Ecuador in a bus, and she say a young disable 11 / 12 year old child with no crouches or leg support. As soon as Krysta saw this child, she knew there was a big global issue with people who do not have access to the resources they need in order to live their day to day lives. She didn’t understood at the moment the intricacies of how global health worked, but she knew that she needed to do something in order to help this health care global issue. Krysta also opened up with a personal story about a friend from high school who died from leukemia, and how this friend had a physiotherapist that deeply impacted her last couple of years in high school. After Krysta’s friend passed away, she realized how helpful a physiotherapist can be in someones life. This made a big impact in Krysta’s life, leaving her with a desire to empower people and give them health care knowledge and resources to allow them to participate in their community without barriers. This answer to Krysta’s “WHY” was straight from her soul, and it made us realize the following: “Whatever we do in life, we want to learn the skills not to be greedy and help ourselves, but to help the world be a better place.” Snowballing on this quote, Krysta reveals that she did not went to school and studied for herself, she studied to make a change in this world, which is the most beautiful reasoning to acquire knowledge we have ever heard, and one that we will adopt for this PODCAST.   Krysta’s passion outside of work is being outdoors in the back country, and she might even call herself an adrenaline junky that searches for extreme experiences with incredible views. Krysta finds recharging every week essential, and she reveals how one of her mentalities is that in the profession of health care, it is very important to step away and recharge yourself. This will prevent you from burning out, and it will allow you to bring the powerful energy you gathered during your rechargeable moments in nature into work.  When Krysta adventures in nature, she reconnects with herself, her spirit, and her soul, thus feeling grounded, full of energy, and at peace. Krysta takes these moments to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, look at global health overall, where she is now, and where she wants to go in the near future. When Krysta is in nature, she feels like she is in a state of pure clarity without any distractions, and she loves making life decisions during these rechargeable moments because she knows that these decisions are coming straight out of her soul.  Krysta finally advises everyone to find your passion outside of work and find a way to recharge your battery for the week.
