•Jessy Dixon was born in San Antonio, TX where he sang and played his first song at the age of five. He and his family moved to Chicago, IL while he was young and during his time singing around Chicago he was discovered by James Cleveland. James Cleveland recorded early songs written by Jessy entitled “God Can Do Anything But Fail,” and “My God Can Make A Way.” Continuing to sing Jessy formed a group of his own The Jessy Dixon Singers who travelled the country singing and performing. •In 1972 Jessy was invited to perform his new song, “The Wicked Shall Cease Their Troubling.” at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Not only did Jessy and his group travel the states they went on tours with Paul Simon across the U.S., France, Canada, Scandinavia, Israel and Japan. They toured extensively with Paul for eight years. •Jessy was invited to sing at a Homecoming video taping where he was exposed to even more audiences and became one of the favorite in a series of the Gaither programming. •Here today with me sharing memories as co-host today is Dr. Charles Clency •You may also “like” and share the episode. He is a native of Chicago and grew up in the mainstream of Gospel music activity. •Dr. Clency has a Bachelor of Arts in Music received at Northeastern Illinois University of Chicago and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Indiana University in Bloomington IN. •He shared his expertise and gifts with multiple colleges, universities and churches throughout the world, and has authored 3 books.  His books are: The Handbook of Gospel Music,  100 Years of Music In The Chicago Black Church and soon to be released later in 2021 is The Last Accompanist of Mahalia Jackson. Here we continue with our series on American music. Today we examine Gospel music. Joining in studio are Bob Marovich, founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Gospel Music and the author of the recently published A City Called Heaven: Chicago and the Birth of Gospel Music. Our second in-studio guest is the esteemed Dr. Charles Clency, who recently retired as the professor of music and director of choirs at the College of Lake County. Dr. Clency has had a distinguished career as a musician and toured with many legends of Gospel.
