There are some topics that are easy to introduce to our PreserveCast listeners. Today’s episode is not one of those – but it is a topic we feel compelled to cover and explore. Among his many responsibilities and positions, today’s guest, Dr. David Fakunle, is also currently serving as the as Chair of the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the first state body in the United States dedicated to chronicling and bringing justice to racial terror lynchings. It is a dark and painful chapter in our history – but a history which we’ll confront and discuss on this week’s PreserveCast with a leader dealing with the legacy of lynchings and the effort to bring justice to those who were denied it.

Healing & Justice: The Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission with Dr. David Fakunle

David Olawuyi Fakunle, Ph.D. is a self-described “mercenary for change,” willing to employ any talent and occupy any space in the effort to elevate people of African descent and anyone who feels divested from their truest self. David earned a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and prior to doctoral study earned a B.A. in Psychology and Criminology &amp; Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland, College Park. David’s research interests include sociodemographic relationships with stressors within the built environment, the manifestations of institutional racism in society, and the utilization of arts and culture to promote equity and ultimately, liberation.

I had the privilege of sitting down with three wonderful humans while spending just a few hours in Baltimore, MD. We met up at Baltimore’s ImpactHub location and I met with them one after the other. By the end, I was drained, encouraged, and, more than anything, had real love in my heart for these three people and the city they cared for and loved. First, you’ll hear my conversation with David Fakunle.
