Hagen was born in Berlin, and he has had long relationship with German directors and reached international attention with The Lives of Others and along The Young Victoria, and Papillon, for Michael Noer, starring Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek. Hagen has worked on other acclaimed films over the years including Hilde and The Beaver for Jodie Foster, and Hotel Lux. More recently, Hagen has been working as both Director and DP, on several projects including the television series Berlin Station  and the film, Prima Ballerina.

His most recent film project saw him work with 'Sons Of Anarchy's' Charlie Hunnam and 'Mr. Robot’s' Rami Malek on the acclaimed period thriller 'Papillion'.Over on the tv side, he has been working as the cinematographer for sci-fi drama 'Counterpart' starring JK Simmons, which comes to STARZPlay at the end of September in the UK, and cinematographer &amp; director on 'Berlin Station', which is coming to More4 later this Autumn. From acclaimed author Olen Steinhauer (‘The Tourist’, ‘All The Old Knives’) ‘Berlin Station’ is a contemporary spy drama that follows the activities of CIA operatives on a global stage amid investigations of moles, terrorists, corrupt politicians and more. Transitioning from his job as a CIA analyst in the US, cerebral officer Daniel Miller’s (Richard Armitage – ‘Hannibal’, ‘Strike Back’, ‘The Hobbit’) new mission puts him undercover at the agency’s Berlin branch, tasked with sorting out messy cases involving damaging leaks, whistle-blowers, terrorism and more. Mentored by jaded veteran officer Hector DeJean (Rhys Ifans – ‘Snowden’, ‘Elementary’) Daniel learns the disorderly world of fieldwork means dealing with deception, danger and moral compromises.
