In this episode, Christopher and Maggie have a conversation with Maureen O'Connell, Associate Professor at LaSalle University. We discuss her book Undoing the Knots: Five Generations of American Catholic Anti-Blackness. We discuss how the white church, not just the Catholic Church, has been complicit in propogating anti-blackness and what we can do to undo those knots. We discuss how racism is baked into our society in its laws and customs. And we discuss how we as Christians can work towards justice. Today’s guest is Dr. Maureen O’Connell, an associate professor of theology at LaSalle University in Philadelphia and a clergy leader with POWER Interfaith. Maureen recently released a book titled, “Undoing the Knots: Five Generations of American Catholic Anti-Blackness.” Maureen and I dig into the history behind the book, including how Irish Catholics learned to define themselves as Americans by rejecting Blackness, going back as far as 1820.

She is anexpert in the art of social justice, she’s an award-winning author and faithful member of POWER (Philadelphians Organizing to Witness, Empower, and Rebuild). POWER is an interfaith federationof 90 faith communities committed to making Philadelphia the city of “just love” (as well as “brotherly love and sisterly affection”) through a more just wage for workers, fair funding for public schools, immigration reform and decarceration. She has a book that was released just last week –UNDOING THE KNOTS; FIVE GENERATIONS OF AMERICAN CATHOLIC ANTI-BLACKNESS. this podcast was recorded on January 28th, 2022.
