 For the past few months, while heroes on the frontlines have been keeping our communities afloat, many of us have been working from home - at home offices, kitchen tables, and maybe even our beds. But what about the people whose offices are outside?  This week, we speak with Amanda Monthei, an outdoor writer, angler, skier, and wildland firefighter. We spoke about her work as a wildland firefighter for the US Forest Service, and what it means to be a hotshot firefighter. Amanda also works as a freelance writer with a particular interest in learning more about the social and environmental impacts of large, high-intensity wildfires that are becoming the norm in the West.

Meet Amanda Monthei, a hotshot wildland firefighter and creative who has made it her mission to empower women and all qualified firefighters to know there is space for them in wildland firefighting. We spoke to Amanda about her path to fighting fires as well as her project “The Women Before Me” that celebrates the women of the Zig Zag hotshot crew, the legacies they humbly left behind, and the qualities they brought to the US Forest Service.In this episode, we learn how the common traits women bring to the firefighting field are important and why it’s valuable to have those traits in any typically male-dominant field. Amanda wants more women to be wildland firefighters, as well to do other outdoor work like trail building or outdoor management.
