Habakkuk is interesting as there is no direct message given to the people of Judah. Rather, it is a record of the prophet’s conversation with God. One could even say it is an argument with God. The prophet cries out against the way things have played out in his nation; believing them to be unjust. God replies to the prophet two times, which leads to a response - one of trust. This trust expressed is not because everything is going to work out well or because things are suddenly all better. Not even close. Habakkuk says, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior” (3.17,18). This is the conclusion Habakkuk comes to.

Here we have a description of love. It begs the question what does patience, kindness, joy, humility, honoring others, seeking good for others, not being easily angered, not keeping a record of wrongs, not delighting in evil, rejoicing with the truth, protecting, trusting, hoping and persevering look like in everyday life? If we can begin to form a response to this question we might come close to being those who put hands and feet on the idea of love. While it may seem overwhelming, this long list has two things in common. First, they all describe the Divine. Second, they all insist we place others before self. So, it could be said, the practice of love is to imitate the love we see in Jesus, one who always placed others before himself.

If one were to talk about an oppressive systemwe would understand what she was talking about. Systems of oppression and domination are everywhere. This is a helpful way of thinking about the word “world” – it is this system that is against God. The very system we are told not to love. Why? Because of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life that come from it: three ways of talking about the evil of it. And this is not the first time we have heard this. Jesus, when in the desert for 40 days, was tempted in all three of these ways. His response? To remember who God is and was and trust that. Because, that will never pass away.
