Why do we do it? That's always a good question to start with. The next one is, how do we do it? What we see is the result of what happens behind the curtain—even, and maybe even more, with smart cities.City employees want to do the right thing — they are not in it for the money. While the budget process may be political, the people engaged in operating the cities are working hard to address issues like homelessness, health and safety, traffic congestion, and even public utilities. It is quite a different story than the plot followed by commercial entities. Those entities can pick their audience and target — a city simply cannot.The challenge we face is a really significant innovation problem. Not so much from a technical perspective; instead, from an organizational perspective. Cities and communities worldwide are organized and operate around functions that go back many, many decades. Many can barely keep up with the growth requirements and the challenges that come with that. Adding to the chaos innovation and digital transformation, and many cities simply can't cope.Something that appears to work really well in design and looks like it functions very well in operation could, actually, turn into a safety issue if security and privacy aren't taken into account from the beginning.
