Cesar Becerra is a modern day nomad. Some might even call him professionally homeless. He found a way to embody his love of adventure, history and creativity into all aspects of his life. He makes a good living AND has a life he LOVES. He is doing what he was born to do, in spite of what his Cuban family expected of him. Becerra is a South Florida historian who’s taken part in chronicling and sharing the stories of the region for more than two decades. He is the author of half a dozen books ranging from hiking the Appalachian Trail to the logging history of the Big Cypress Preserve. Cesar is an avid explorer who drove through all 50 states in a one-year road trip to rediscover America for the Travel Channel. He has also hiked the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, in 388 days through 14 states and 4 seasons. Cesar is former publisher of The Everglade Magazine, an award winning publication printed during Everglades National Park's 50th anniversary. He has walked, hiked, slogged, canoed, kayaked, airboated and swamp buggied all across the Everglades. In 1997, The Miami Herald named him an "Everglades Evangelist''. Cesar’s love for the past and sense of adventure is where his two worlds unite. He has a penchant for hidden history and knows no boundaries or distances when it comes to searching for it.

Maud and Cesar hiked their "thorough hike" in 2001, spending more than a year on the trail. They were determined to squeeze every last experience from the Appalachian Trail, covering the nearly 2,200 miles across all four seasons.  Their dog, Trudy, joined them and turned out to be the star of their movie. I particularly liked the way in which Cesar "helped" Trudy cross a river! For trail historians, the movie contains the added bonus of an interview with trail legend, Earl Shaffer. Episode #5 - Maud Dillingham and Cesar Becerra

Join author Billy Jones on Sunday, August 21st (3-4 p.m. EST), for BJ Speaks: An Interview with Cesar Becerra, filmmaker, writer, and historian. Cesar is a former road warrior (when gas was 99 cents a gallon) who drove through all 50 states in a one-year road trip for the Travel Channel television network. A type 2 diabetic, Cesar decided to "thorough-hike" the 2,160 mile Appalachian Trail in 388 days and through all 4 seasons. Now addicted to long distance walking, he has begun the first leg of a 20,000-mile journey (The World Walk for Diabetes) as he attempts to circumnavigate the globe (that's right the planet!) on foot (so far Key West to Arizona). Filmmaker and writer with more than a dozen titles to his resume, he also teaches environmental education at Nature's Classroom and is the lead tour manager for Educational Field Trips. He is an Everglades historian who promotes conservation and love of this natural wonder by touring school groups, friends and family through the park. Far more than an aimless wanderer, Becerra teeters on the edge of two worlds: that as an observer of modern day life and a believer of turning back the clock to a simpler time. He is at the helm of interesting projects that educate, entertain, &amp; inform people about a new (feel free to call it radical) approach of living a balanced and purposeful life.
