Serving as the Walker’s Senior Curator of Performing Arts since 1997, Philip Bither spearheads one of the country's leading contemporary performing arts programs. He oversaw the 2005 building of the McGuire Theater, an acclaimed theatrical space and production laboratory; raised the Walker’s first dedicated performing arts endowment; commissioned of more than 180 new works; and hosts the annual residency and presentation support of dozens of contemporary performing arts creators. Prior to this, he was Artistic Director for the Flynn Center in Burlington, VT and served as Associate Director/Music Curator for BAM’s Next Wave Festival. In 2011, he co-founded the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance (ICPP) graduate program at Wesleyan University. He regularly sits on foundation and governmental arts panels, writes about interdisciplinary curatorial practice and travels globally to research new performance and to speak about trends in the contemporary performing arts.

Nature Theater of Oklahoma talks to Philip Bither, Senior Curator of Performing Arts at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, about ego, humility, and identity.  Is it an arrogant act to program work (or make work) that you may personally feel is important -- for an audience who may not want that kind of challenge?  What is the grass roots work a good curator has to do to find and foster public interest (as populist as we can make it) in these so-called “difficult” works?

Rotary Club Radio Episode 026 Featured Segment  On September 22, 2011, at the Walker Art Center in Downtown Minneapolis, a documentary film will be previewed featuring the band Staff Benda Bilili.  The band originates from the Democratic Republic of the Congo – and each band member has a unique story to tell about how Polio has effected them. Rotary International has been a supporter of this event and film, which promotes so much of what Rotary is known for around the world and they want to encourage you to attend and promote these important events that focus on Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio. The Documentary Film, “BENDA BILILI!” will be previewed on September 22, 2011, at the Walker Art Center, but it will be released widely around the United States in the coming months – so if you missed it, be sure to look for again soon! Here is a little more about the group: Staff Benda Bilili, is an up and coming group of rising music stars that will be touring our area. Most of the members of the group are survivors of Polio. This is a major opportunity to get the word out in your community of the fact that Rotary is dedicated to the eradication of this deadly disease. Significantly the group is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where the disease had been eliminated but has now resurfaced in a major way. Staff Benda Bilili, has a wonderful sound that is truly unique to our Midwestern ears, especially when you understand the messages they are conveying to the listeners. Watch the video below where they are singing about the importance of Polio Vaccinations.
