Eddie McMahon, 17, glioblastoma, Lowell, with dad, Ed Sr.● Eddie was diagnosed with glioblastoma (brain tumor) level 4 in June 2022.● He had lost function in his left hand, such as not being able to pick things up or use avideo game controller. An MRI scan revealed a brain tumor.● Eddie had surgery on June 8 to remove the tumor while living in Florida. The tumorwas malignant, so the family decided to move back to Massachusetts, where theywere originally from, for further treatment at Dana-Farber and Boston Children’s.● Eddie has been undergoing radiation therapy for six weeks and he has started oralchemotherapy that will go on for potentially one year. He is also in physical andoccupational therapy to address the left-side weakness.● Eddie knows he is in a special place and given the best care for cancer treatment atDana-Farber, where people come from all over the world to be treated. He feels thedoctors are compassionate and the staff are very helpful.● His doctors are Dr. Chi, Dr. Gampel, and Dr. Hass-Kogan. ● Eddie loves baseball!● He is going into his senior year of high school.Glioblastoma facts● Astrocytomas and gliomas are tumors that grow from brain cells called astrocytes.● These tumors can often develop in the cerebellum, the cerebrum, the brainstem, thehypothalamus, or the visual pathway.● These brain tumors are either classified as low-grade (grades I and II) or high-grade(grades III and IV) tumors. Children with low-grade tumors have a relatively favorableprognosis, especially when the tumors can be completely resected.● Dana-Farber/Boston Children's houses the Pediatric Low-Grade Astrocytoma (PLGA)Program, the world's only multidisciplinary clinical and research program dedicatedto pediatric low-grade gliomas.● Established in 2007 with support from the PLGA Foundation, the program takes amultifaceted approach to finding more effective, less toxic treatments and a cure forchildren battling brain tumors and has become the standard bearer for the researchand care of pediatric brain tumors.
