This Spartan race champion has had a lifetime full of obstables, adversities and health issues, yet her " eyes always foreward" approach to life and positive mindset has led her a plethora of championships in the Spartan Community. Inspired by her son, who competes in Spartan races, she went from a "no exercise" routine to completeing her first Spartan Sprint in 2016 at age 70 and she has never looked back! She's the first female athlete to podium over 70 on a trail race and the only racer over 70 to do the Spartan World Championship (3 times)! She deals with Scoliosis, Degenerative Disc Disease, Osteoarthritis, a reconstructed neck due to a car crash with a drunk driver, reconstructive right hand surgery and recent back surgery yet....she continues to forge ahead with her postive mindset and positive self talk to compete in more races!  A compelling, motivational and very inspirational conversation! A true life champion on and off the trail!

Meet 78 yr. old Marla Sweeney! Spartan Race Champion!

This episode features a Seasoned Athlete first: this is the first time a guest is featured on this show for the second time! This week we talk to 73-year old Spartan Racer Marla Sweeney. We first featured Marla in a short Everyday Seasoned Athlete segment in 2017. This time around, she sat down with us for a full interview. Marla ran her first Spartan Race at age 70, and from then on she was hooked on racing. In 2018 alone, Marla completed 19 races, including 11 Spartan Races. She earned the coveted Spartan Trifecta – which is the completion of their three different race lengths in the same calendar year. Scratch that, she earned THREE Trifectas in 2018. Marla was recently featured in Runners World, she’s become known as an inspirational figure within the Spartan Race community, and is a fixture at West Coast races. In this interview, Marla catches us up on what she’s been up to, goes in depth and gets a bit emotional about what living an active life has done for her, and talks about a big step she was taking to “spread her wings” as an obstacle racer. Climbing mountains and conquering obstacles with Spartan Racer Marla Sweeney (048)

At age 70 she tried her first Spartan Race. At seventy two years old, 16.7 miles, five thousand feet of climbing at nearly two miles above sea level, she crossed the Lake Tahoe Spartan Race Championship finish line. For Marla Sweeney, this was the twenty third time in almost as many months of crossing that line. She started this endeavor while still managing pain from a head on car accident. Is that inspiring enough for you? Marla doesn’t consider herself special and will crush all your excuses. We celebrate her and all other strong women on International Women’s Day on March 8th!
