They discuss his mentor, David Gooding, and his work at The Myrtylefield Trust and Myrtlefield House (the publishing arm of the trust.). This American born scholar has made his home in Northern Ireland the last 18 years.After discussing a bit about his life and call, Fitzhugh shares how important John Lennox and David Gooding have been to his intellectual development. Upon finishing his PhD  at Queens College, Belfast, he went to work at the Myrtlefield Trust to help archive the extensive writings, lectures, sermons, and notes of David Gooding. David Gooding (1925-2019), was born in Suffolk, England.  Because of his reading of Scripture, he became a conscientious objector in WWII and did national service on a farm in England.  He studied classics at University of Durham and Queens College in Belfast.  In 1959 he began teaching at Queens College and spent his entire life as professor, teacher, author, and speaker. His primary research area was the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. The Myrtlefield Trust was established in 1986 to organize Gooding’s travel, speaking, and to help in writing ministry.  It was about this time that David Gooding joined forces with Oxford mathematician and apologist, John Lennox, to visit to the former Soviet Union.When the wall came down in 1989, many opportunities arose for this team to speak, lecture and write in Russia and former Soviet States. Essentially the question was raised: What can replace Marxism?  Gooding and Lennox began to address these issues and taught teachers in Russia and Ukraine to compare world views.Finally, their thoughts were distilled into an important book entitled, The Quest for Reality and Significance. The Myrtlefield House Is the publishing arm of the Myrtlefield Trust.  They give away most of their books as ebooks.  If you’re interested in knowing more about David Gooding and Myrtlefield Trust take a look at their website: www.myrtlefieldhouse.com.  They are funded by donations, so be generous. To learn more about John Lennox, go to www.johnlennox.org.John Lennox is schedule to speak at the Lanier Theological Library in Houston on September 10, 2022.  To read more go to  https://www.laniertheologicallibrary.org/event/september-10-2022-lecture-by-john-lennox/?event_date=2022-09-10Or click here. T. Wright, Marianne Meye Thompson, Richard Hays and a host of others. As an informal club, it had no membership.  But scholars who heard of the group wanted to become members and own one of the coveted coffee mugs produced by Baylor University Press. To be a member, a scholar needed to have written books or articles making the case that the evidence demonstrates that Jesus is worshiped from early moments of the movement and set in such close association with God that he could properly be referred to as divine. After relating the “founding myth” of the organization in the mid-1990s Carey Newman situates the club within the stream of scholarship. Some regard the worship of Jesus to be a later development in the first century (60-70 years after the execution of Jesus).  Others think it happened much later (hundreds of years).  But members of the EHCC generally make the case that historically it arose for various reasons within the first decade of the movement. Several Early High Christology Club members have lectured at the Lanier Library: Larry Hurtado, Richard Hays, and N. T. T. Wright, Marianne Meye Thompson, Richard Hays and a host of others. As an informal club, it had no membership.  But scholars who heard of the group wanted to become members and own one of the coveted coffee mugs produced by Baylor University Press. To be a member, a scholar needed to have written books or articles making the case that the evidence demonstrates that Jesus is worshiped from early moments of the movement and set in such close association with God that he could properly be referred to as divine. After relating the “founding myth” of the organization in the mid-1990s Carey Newman situates the club within the stream of scholarship. Some regard the worship of Jesus to be a later development in the first century (60-70 years after the execution of Jesus).  Others think it happened much later (hundreds of years).  But members of the EHCC generally make the case that historically it arose for various reasons within the first decade of the movement. Several Early High Christology Club members have lectured at the Lanier Library: Larry Hurtado, Richard Hays, and N. T. One of the first places Christianity spread was to Egypt where there has been a continual Christian community. There are many Christian texts written in Coptic and many early Greek texts were translated into Coptic.Not long after Karen King announced the find, Christian Askeland began blogging about it and it became clear that 60-70% of the scholars thought it was a forgery.  Many others remained quiet, waiting for the results of further research. In this podcast, Christian Askeland gives David Capes some inside information about how scholars proved the fragment was a forgery.  Simon Gathercole, Francis Watson, and others also sounded the alarm. The Internet too played a role in unraveling the claim.In the end, “the Gospel of Jesus’ wife” was a modern forgery. This ensures the dignity of the books as well as those who receive them.  Also, they are sold in bookshops.  This creates jobs in places where jobs are scarce.  Book-Aid staff are keen on sending the right kind of books to their partners. Books that are too “academic” or in the wrong languages are sold online to provide income for the charity.If you find yourself in London, make your way to south London to see their incredible book shop. What insight would we have that may not be apparent otherwise?Though there are only a few quotations of the Hebrew Bible in Revelation, nearly every verse has a symbol, an image, a reference to these earlier books. According to Briannica, it is the everyday material belongings used by a culture. So, things like clothing, tools, art, machines, utinsils and religious objects are material culture.Recently Dr. Capes met Dr. Charlesworth at his home in Princeton, NJ, to see his extensive library and hundreds of antiquities he has collected since he first began his work as a scholar in 1963.  And in this episode he discusses the parable of the senseless virgins (The book of Matthew, chapter 25, verses 1-13 in the Christian Bible) who brought lamps but forgot to bring extra oil. They talk about how knowing the size, shape and function of the lamp and filler, helps us step into the story. We can understand much better the significance of the events. Now we understand the importance of knowing details about Herodian lamps and oil fillers. The oil lamps of the time period did not look like the “Aladdin and genie” lamps that we imagine from movies!Here’s a photo of this style oil lamp and filler taken at his home. Dr. James Charlesworth is the retired George Collard Professor of Princeton Theological Seminary. Few scholars have had the kind of experiences Dr. Charlesworth has enjoyed.  He has worked with some of the best scholars in the world and has authored, co-authored, or edited hundreds of books (most of which you can find at the Lanier Theological Library). In his retirement he is working to complete the Dead Sea Scrolls project he started at Princeton Theological Seminary. In those years he saw how he tended to read Scripture through a cultural lens vastly different from the world of the Bible. This is not a book about bashing the West; no, Richards celebrates all the contributions the West has made to furthering the gospel. But he does want to alert us to the subtleties of “what goes without being said” in our culture and the Scriptures’.He gives two examples: the first, from the Joseph story (Genesis) and second, from Paul’s admonition in 1 Timothy for women to dress “modestly.” What goes without being said, in both cases, differs from various cultures.Now, any cultural reading could be off, and Dr. Richards admits that.  Someone, he says, should write a book “Misreading Scripture with Eastern Eyes.” This is an important book and a timely book.
