In this episode Dante is being questioned by St. Peter about the first and foundational virtue of Faith - what it is, if Dante has it, and where he finds the proof. This is the first of three examinations on the theological virtues Faith, Hope and Love/Charity - by the Apostles in the Fixed Stars. This canto is full of very deep and profound philosophical and theological questions, but still with a firm footing in a secular understanding of the spiritual and Divine.
