This week the Friends experienced two shows. One was an immersive play for one person for Portaleza by David Israel Reynoso/Optika Moderna, presented by La Jolla Playhouse. The prompt is: Send a message to a person in your life who has died. It's supernatural and kind of sci-fi. Then they review something more high-budget but also similarly technical: Romantics Anonymous, a new musical from Emma Rice, Christopher Dimond, and Michael Kooman. It was live-streamed straight from London's Old Vic Theatre and it was fully staged! The musical is about two socially awkward chocolate makers who fall in love. What do the Brits know that we don't about beating COVID and getting theater back?This week's guests are playwrights Luis Alfaro (Mojada, Oedipus El Rey) and Alexis Scheer (Our Dear Dead Drug Lord), in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Plays: Our Dear Dead Drug Lord (WP Theater/Second Stage, NYT Critic’s Pick, Kilroy’s List, LTC Carnaval of New Latinx Work finalist, Relentless Award semifinalist, Bay Area Playwrights Festival finalist), Laughs in Spanish, Christina (Roe Green Award), and The Sensational (Actors' Theatre of Louisville). Alexis Scheer: creating, producing, & writing women in theatre

A conversation with my longtime friend and playwright of Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, Alexis Scheer. Alexis is one of the most intelligent people I know. She is as kind and caring and compassionate as she is articulate and witty. Her knowledge of herself and her experiences is refreshing and straight-up inspiring. I've wanted to sit down and put microphones in front of our mouths for a long time, but with her play currently running at WP Theatre off-Broadway - now seemed like the perfect time to go deep and break down what this experience has been like. This is Alexis' New York debut as a playwright and it is the very beginning of what I am certain will be a long and incredibly exciting career in this industry.
