I’m in Eastern Oregon, in a small, rural town named for American trapper John Day. But John Day isn’t known for hunting or gold. It houses a literal time capsule documenting Chinese migration and adaptation to American life. Ten years earlier than my great, great grandfather’s journey, Doctor Ing Hay immigrated from the same region in China to John Day, Oregon. While I've never seen mementos from my great, great grandfather’s trunk, Ing Hay left behind a time capsule that is a National Historic Landmark and Oregon State Heritage Site.
