Good morning, it’s Monday July 5th and this is The Herald Review’s Daily Chirp podcast. We’re bringing you a closer look at one of our top stories, along with other important things going on in our community.    Today - An effort that would help the homeless through vouchers could be up and running by October.   Before we begin, some local history.   Murray Springs once served as a Clovis hunting camp approximately 9000 years BCE. The site is unique for the massive quantity of large megafauna processing and extensive tool making.    In fact, archaeologists identified five buried animal kills and processing locations and a Clovis camp location. The site is located in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.   In 1966, archaeologists from the University of Arizona discovered the site while extending the mapping of the area of the Lehner Mammoth Kill Site. They located two concentrations of mammoth bones that day. Scott Borgstadt, president of the Better Bucks of Sierra Vista board.   Said that they decided to form their own nonprofit. Borgstadt is also a corporal with Sierra Vista Police and one of the agency’s spokespersons.   Initially, the Better Bucks board was going to seek out a nonprofit in the area that would run the program. But that became a challenge during the pandemic because of a lack of volunteers.    Borgstadt said that one member, Joe McDermott, was instrumental in getting the board to become its own nonprofit.    Now, the articles of incorporation have been sent to the state and once that’s approved, the board will apply to the IRS for nonprofit tax exemption status.   The goal of the Better Bucks program is to give homeless and needy individuals and families vouchers for essential items.   The idea is to give vouchers rather than money so that it wouldn’t be spent on drugs or booze.   The Better Bucks vouchers come in booklets. And the general public can purchase the voucher booklets for $6 - this includes five $1 vouchers. The extra dollar goes toward printing the booklets and other administrative costs.   The vouchers will include information on community services and organizations that provide assistance to the homeless as well.    Some of the organizations that have agreed to list their names on the vouchers include Lori’s Place, Good Neighbor Alliance, The Salvation Army, Warrior Healing Center, St. Vincent de Paul, Arizona@Work and Goodwill Job Connections.   A one-day bus pass also will be included in the voucher booklet.   The Better Bucks board — the organization soon will be known as Better Bucks of Sierra Vista, the nonprofit — hopes to have a booth at the Art in the Park event the first weekend in October.   At a City Council work session earlier this month, Borgstadt told the panel that several local businesses would have to sign up to accept the Better Bucks for their products. The businesses would be reimbursed with cash by the nonprofit after the businesses provide the organization with receipts.   He hopes to have merchants on board by mid-August. And the first business is to sign up Friends of the Sierra Vista Library. They hope it will accept vouchers in exchange for books.   The local program was inspired by the one in Flagstaff launched by local police and the Shadows Foundation. Shadows.    Start-up costs for launching the Better Bucks program will be about $15,000. And the city of Sierra Vista has already pledged $10,000.   The board has also applied for funding from the Legacy Foundation and the Arizona Community Foundation. And they’re getting donations from the public, as well as from the Fraternal Order of Police and the Citizens Police Academy Associates.   Sierra Vista City Councilman Gregory L. Johnson praised the efforts of the Better Bucks board.   He said a lot of people are concerned about the homeless population here in Sierra Vista. But they still found a way to play on Friday.   In Douglas on Thursday evening Santa Cruz surrendered 20 runs to Nogales in the top half of the first inning.   Storms that had been threatening the area, forcing play to be halted.    Gusting wind and pounding rain soaked Douglas to the point that Thursday’s games were eventually canceled.   Santa Cruz later conceded its game to Nogales, which now advances to Tuesday’s semifinal game.   And following some serious field repair efforts by Douglas Little League volunteers, three games were played on Friday.    The first between Sierra Vista and San Pedro.   San Pedro jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but then surrendered six straight runs to Sierra Vista in the third, fourth and sixth innings as the Sierra Vista All-Stars came away with a 6-3 win.   They’ll now face Nogales on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.   In the elimination game that followed, San Pedro faced host Douglas, falling 11-1 in four innings. With the loss San Pedro was eliminated from the tournament with a 1-2 record.   In the third game, Willcox eliminated Santa Cruz 20-5 and will face Douglas on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in an elimination game.   The winner of this game will face the loser of the Sierra Vista Nogales game on Wednesday.   Good luck to all of our teams! Karl was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather. He served in the US Air Force as a communications specialist for over four years. He continued to serve as a Department of Defense communications specialist for 32 years before retiring. Karl was an avid golfer, long-time coach for the Sierra Vista Ponytail Softball League and a life-long fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He loved playing games and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Pat, of 55 years, his children and their families, as well as five much loved grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin sister, Karon and three brothers.    A service will take place at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista on July 12.
