Nadine Brown started her relationship with all things flowers as a teenager, scoring a job in a garden centre at the age of 15. From there, she went on to volunteer at a local flower shop and study horticulture at TAFE before opening her own florist, Wildflower, at the age of just 23. About 10 years later, due to the intense demands that came as a result of overwhelming success, Nadine sold the shop and transitioned the wedding and event side of her business to Nadine Floral Design. She spent the next 17 years immersed in motherhood, facilitating up to 60 weddings a year and maintaining a career as a floristry teacher at TAFE. In 2019 however, it was time for another change. Wild Flora Studio denoted the start of another chapter in Nadine's career, focusing on bespoke workshops and mentoring and a scaling back of weddings. Like many, Covid prompted her to explore an online offering, giving members access to a huge library of professional tutorials, education, coaching &amp; community. Recently rebranded as 'The Ivy Institute', Nadine now offers most of her resources exclusively online. If this didn't leave Nadine busy enough, in 2021 she opened the doors to The Hut at Cedar&amp;Fern, an off-grid rustic cabin built by her partner Rob using reclaimed materials and decked out with an assortment of family treasures. Talking with Nadine was an absolute treat and I hope you get as much enjoyment out of listening to our chat as I did having it.

Sommelier Nadine Brown was born and raised along the shores of Jamaica and Puerto Rico. She came to the states to pursue a degree in social work. After working with children for a number of years she later moved to D.C. After months of trying to find a job in her field she took a job as a hostess at a new French restaurant opening on Capitol Hill. She had no previous restaurant experience and had every intention to return to social work. However, she fell in love with the hospitality industry. She quickly moved up from hostess to manager in a few short years. Nadine first came to wine by reading and found the history of wine fascinating and took her first wine captain course to help her be a better manager.  Today, Nadine is a twenty year veteran of the Washington, D.C. restaurant industry. She spent over 14 years at Charlie Palmer Steak as Wine Director and Sommelier. Nadine and her husband were managing partners of Society Fair, a boutique eatery in Alexandria Virginia, where she worked as General Manager and Sommelier. She is a two-time winner of the D.C. RAMMY’s Wine Program of the year for the region. Her palate won her the title of rising star from Star Chef in the summer of 2006. Nadine is a proud board member of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan D.C. and the nonprofit the Verasion Project. Nadine holds certifications from both the Court of Master Sommelier and WSET. She continues to be a mentor to many young professionals in the business. She is a mother of two rambunctious children, Estelle and Emerson who keep her on her toes daily. She came to the US to study and work, and when plans didn’t work out, she found herself applying for a job as a restaurant host in Washington DC. She had no previous restaurant experience and had every intention for it to be a temporary position. However, she fell in love with the hospitality industry. In restaurants she discovered her love of the energy and adrenaline of working the floor, and she discovered wine. It fascinated her and sparked her curiosity. Born in Jamaica, she grew up with coffee and rum and no exposure to wine, but once she found it she couldn’t let it go. Through hard work, smarts, and determination – that good old American cliché - she learned, and trained, and worked her way up to become an award winning sommelier and wine director for Charlie Palmer Steakhouse – one of the premier restaurants for DC’s political and social elite. At Charlie Palmer she built a renowned cellar focused on American wines and served wine to people at the highest levels of politics, even a future president, all while meeting her husband in the kitchen and becoming the mother of two children.  Now she is a proud board member of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan D.C. and the extremely well-named nonprofit the Veraison Project, which is dedicated to bringing more color to the wine industry through greater access to wine education, wine certifications, mentoring, and networking for people of color.
