As a registered dietitian I studied the relationships between diet, health and how nutrients affect our bodies. This gives me the knowledge to advise individuals on how to select and prepare healthy food and establish good eating habits. Working one on one with clients is only one path (out of many) that was available to me within my dietetics major. Today I interviewed a friend and former college roommate who took the same classes but ended up with a career in the corporate world. Adelaide uses her knowledge and expertise working in nutrition communications for a communications marketing agency. She finds this field energizing and her favorite part is designing ways to engage and motivate different audiences effectively.Her clients are not individuals but brands and companies who make and sell products and services. Two of her primary clients make healthy food. Their product is already nutritious, and it is her job to come up with a marketing strategy to educate families about what is in the product and how to incorporate it into a healthy diet and a healthy meal.The same passion for health and nutrition took us down different paths but our end goal is still the same, helping you live a healthy lifestyle that will benefit you, your children and future generations.Covid 19 becomes the topic in many conversations so today I discussed how it has affected Adelaide and her thoughts on the subject.During the initial lock down she realized, along with many of us, that she could not do everything. As an employee (working from home) she was too distracted, she is a terrible teacher and didn’t have the patience to be a good parent. She had to simplify their lives and prioritize her family’s well-being. Family connection, when you can’t connect with others, has a big benefit, so she has created a tradition to shut down at 5 or 6 o’clock and have family time.Globally, this generation of kids will be defined by what Covid 19 has done and their experiences with it. They will grow up to be more germaphobes which has good and bad sides. We don’t know about the impact on the immune system. There are benefits of being exposed to some germs to build immunity. If we protect too much, we don’t know how it will affect us. There are positives that will come out of this time too. It is teaching us to be flexible and to have a reset mentality of back to basics and simplicity. We do not need to have constant stimulation. Being bored is okay. Our kids will be stronger for it. It is teaching them to be independent and giving them creativity skills to carry into the future.Shift your focus and mindset to the opportunities for growth and learning that can come out of this. Take every day to simplify what you are eating and make the best choices you can. They won’t be perfect and that’s okay. As far as fitness, do what you can. The little bit that you can get is better than nothing. Take it day by day and find opportunities to make improvements and learn for the future.
