Thinking about shifting your business model is one thing… Actually doing it? Well, that’s a whole other thing. You might wonder: do I burn the old one to the ground? Do I make a gradual shift? Or do I just tack on one more service to my offerings? Maybe you do start from scratch… or maybe you take a more nuanced approach to shifting your business model from one to another… or maybe you add more value to your existing model. Whatever your path, it’s crucial to examine the risks in your business, re-examine your business model, and then make changes to how you do business. This month, we’re shifting from the abstract and into reality with stories from entrepreneurs like you of what it really looks like to evolve your business from one model to another. My guest today is Margy Thomas, Ph.D., who recently made the move from 1:1 services to a membership model. Margy’s community, ScholarShape, is a place for creative, visionary scholars to gather and support each other in creating Story-Arguments, a framework that she developed. Evolving Toward a Community Business Model with Margy Thomas

On this episode, Katie is joined by Dr. Margy Thomas, the founder of ScholarShape and the creator of the Build Your Story-Argument program. Margy founded ScholarShape in 2013 as an academic editing and writing consultation service, and through her years of helping hundreds of scholars develop their book and article manuscripts, she synthesized a unique framework for manuscript construction that is now the basis of the Build Your Story-Argument program where scholars hone their own Story-Argument models: flexible mental frameworks for navigating the process of writing and creating new knowledge in whatever forms and genres are relevant to the individual. The mission of the Build Your Story-Argument program is to put the benefits of developmental editing in scholars' own hands, in an accessible and self-directed form. Margy lives in Durham, North Carolina, with her son and their several imaginary pets. The Nitty Gritty* Margy Thomas, Ph.D. and founder of ScholarShape, supports academics and researchers in telling their stories through what she calls the Story-Argument concept. This tool or strategy, applied to her clients’ work, turns their text into “both a functional machine and a pleasing work of art.”* Why Margy’s so passionate about academic writing, plus the reason Margy works with clients across different specialties instead of niching down* How Margy turned the “magic” of the way she works into a repeatable process — and how that changed the way she works with her 1:1 clients* Why she uses tarot cards to better understand what she already knows and look at things with a new perspectiveIt’s tempting to think that to do your best work, you have to hunker down in your creative cave, scratch out your brilliant thoughts by the fire, and only emerge once you’ve had your eureka moment. Recently, Margy has been working to systematize her coaching and create a framework she can share with more academics crafting books and papers. Margy has been sharing the bones of her coaching framework—the Story-Argument Model—with her audience little by little as she develops it. Together with her audience, she’s defining the work and improving on it. Instead of waiting for her eureka moment, she’s utilizing her creative process in dialogue with the people who need her work most.
