Alors qu’Apple doit dévoiler prochainement son nouvel iPhone et que la 5G s'apprête à être déployée en France, ces nouvelles technologies et la place qu’elles doivent prendre dans notre vie font régulièrement l'objet de questions et d'inquiétudes. Eric Salobir est prêtre dominicain, fondateur du groupe de réflexion "Optic" et consultant aurpès du Vatican sur les technologies. Son dernier livre Dieu et la Silicon Valley, paraît ce jeudi aux éditions Buchet-Chastel.		La révolution numérique est déjà bien amorcée, mais "on n’a pas encore pris la mesure de ce qu’on a fait et de ce qu’on a pas fait. Les transformations les plus fortes sont encore à venir", assure Eric Salobir.		Mais le monde n’a pas été désacralisé pour autant. "Le numérique, c’est quelque chose d’extrêmement pratique. Et on voit aussi que cette technologie ne peut fonctionner qu’avec l’humain", explique-t-il avant d'ajouter "la pensée magique est toujours là. Pour celui qui utilise cette technologie sans vraiment la comprendre, il y a quelque chose qui le dépasse". LA TECHNOLOGIE ET SES DANGERS"Le danger ce serait de voir la technologie comme un totem", alerte père Eric Salobir. Plusieurs questions émergent aussitôt : "qu’est-ce qu’on abandonne à cette technologie ? Est-ce qu’on n'est pas en train de déléguer des bouts de notre vie à cet objet ?" Il faut rester vigilant, surtout que les technologies sont fabriquées par des personnes qui en sont très enthousiastes. 		Et c’est ce qu’Eric Salobir constate avec la Silicon Valley qu'il connaît bien : "son succès c’est de rendre l’invisible beau. Ils réussissent à donner une forme de simplicité à la technologie". Mais le danger c’est d’être obnubilé par cette simplicité et de fantasmer une optimisation de la société. LES TECHNOLOGIES ESSENTIELLES LORS DE LA CRISE SANITAIREL’émergence du numérique est une des choses qu’a mis en lumière la pandémie. Avec le confinement et les réunions en visioconférence, "ces technologies ont conduit à une numérisation de la société. Cette technologie vient s’immiscer dans tout".		Mais selon Eric Salobir, la crise a aussi montré qu'il faut "qu’on adapte notre façon de faire. Ça ne veut pas dire qu’il faut tout transformer. Je crois en la relation humaine face à face", conclut-il.

Hacking at the Vatican?! Can you combine 2,000 years of deep, Catholic tradition with something as modern as hacking?   For our next guest, Fr. Eric Salobir, the answer was most certainly, “Yes!” Fr. Salobir helped to organize the first-ever “hackathon” at the Vatican where groups of students from 62 universities from around the world, including Harvard, Stanford, MIT and many more, “hacked” ideas that could help humanity in three key areas: Fostering inter-religious dialogue, helping the poor and underprivileged people, and supporting refugees and migrants. In our interview with Fr. Salobir, he talks about this event and how his organization, OPTIC Technology, is building a network of the top thinkers, scientists, religious leaders, high-tech leaders to discuss ways we can use technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) for good of humanity. He also talks about a recent panel he participated in that included Max Tegmark, PhD of MIT where Dr. Tegmark boldly stated that we shouldn’t be “carbon chauvinists.”  We discuss the promise and pitfalls of AI, how values might be embedded into AI, and how we seek to ensure these values will align with our Christian values. He's also a consultant for the Pontifical Council of Communication as well as an expert for the delegation of the Holy See at UNESCO. He teaches digital communication at Catholic University of Paris and he's a graduate of ISC Paris Business School and worked at the French Embassy in Prague and also worked in banking for a while. He joined the Order of Dominicans in 2000 and graduated in theology and philosophy.
