Michelle Cardinal is the CEO &amp; Co-Founder of Portland based Rain Growth Agency.Her first company, Cmedia quickly became one of the top DRTV media buying players in the country with clients such as Humana, Carnival Cruise Line, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America. In 2005, Michelle merged her company with Respond2, a Portland, Oregon creative agency, to create the fully integrated DTC agency, R2C Group. After rebranding as Rain the growth agency in 2020, it is one of the top, independent advertising agencies in the country, helping to build many well-known brands including: 23andMe, Peloton, Chewy, SimpliSafe, Humana, Bissell, 1-800 Contacts, LendingTree, and many more.Michelle pioneered the marketing philosophy “transactional brand building” which believes in driving sales and building a brand at the same time. This week we feature Michelle Cardinal, CEO and Co-founder of the R2C Group, a digital marketing firm headquartered in Portland, OR. Michelle was recently on campus as this semester's Gilkey Lecture Speaker. She used the opportunity to talk about the power of business to give back and do good. We talk about the important work she and her firm are doing to fight homelessness and we also discuss some interesting ideas on women in the workplace. Thanks for listening!

Growing up in Boston, one of 9 children, Michelle Cardinal, co-founder and CEO of R2C Group in Portland, Oregon, got the TV bug. Big time. 70s TV, according to Cardinal, was an escape and it was part of the foundation that led her to LA where she began her career as a media buyer in the informercial business. From there, the evolution began — a commitment to continually elevating television marketing and doing something unheard of in the go-go, get-the-quick-hit 90s: helping brands use television to build for the long-haul. Setting her sights on going big with the likes of Phillips, Hoover Braun and Estee Lauder, Cardinal played the role of outsider, putting aside conventional thinking to build R2C Group. Even the home base of Portland has an outsider feel, but Cardinal is loyal to The Rose City and proud that it is part of the story. In fact, she’s playing an active part in being part of the solution of Portland’s homeless problem — another important way of thinking big. Like her family, Cardinal’s team is tight-knit. She also preaches self-awareness and respect as core values and something everyone should learn and understand.
