Visitor's flocking to Queenstown over the school holidays have surpassed expectations.The tourism hotspot which has been hit hard by the economic impacts of Covid-19, has enjoyed an influx of domestic travellers over the past two weeks.Destination Queenstown CEO Ann Lockhart told Francesca Rudkin some businesses were catering for more people than they anticipated."Some of the bookings have been more last minute, it's really difficult to plan around that, but having said that, there is plenty of capacity in Queenstown."However, today marks the end of school holidays, meaning that many families are now heading back home. Closed borders mean that most of the international tourists who flock in during winter are not able to visit. Lockhart says that post-lockdown, businesses have sized their businesses to what they think is appropriate based on what they think will happen."We're dealing with what we can deal with and what's in front of us, and that's a very enthusiastic domestic market."

Queenstown tourism is delighted to hear New Zealand will be moving to Alert Level 2 on Thursday.Tourism has been suffering severely during lock down and is now ready to welcome local tourists.Destination Queenstown interim CEO, Ann Lockhart, told Kate Hawkesby tourism operations are having to re-think their marketing."There's a number of different ways to encourage domestic travellers to visit Queenstown."Lockhart says they've always welcomed local tourists but now the industry has to market specifically to them.She says it's a matter of changing what they're offering - perhaps packaging some up with other activities.LISTEN ABOVE
