Coburn Farms has been in operation for more than 200 years, and like many family-owned farms, they are facing a transitional phase from one generation to the next. Father and son duo David and Tyler Coburn join us this week to talk about how they have approached farm succession planning and to share some lessons for both the older generations passing on their businesses and the younger generations beginning to manage those operations.

Following a recently published text in e-flux journal issue 98 (March 2019), Tyler Coburn joins Contributing Editor Elvia Wilk to discuss the project Ergonomic Futures.     Coburn's Ergonomic Futures asks questions about contemporary “fitness” through the lens of speculative evolution. The multi-part project includes furniture designed with Bureau V and a website of stories designed with Luke Gould and Afonso Martins.      Tyler Coburn is an artist and writer based in New York. Ergonomic Futures: Tyler Coburn and Elvia Wilk

From speaking to both Geri and Tyler on separate occasions I felt there was a nice parallel of the things we talked about which might make for an interesting double bill. I’ve known Geri for a few years now, and this was my first time meeting Tyler, but both of them are super clever and considerate people who were great to talk to. Maybe I should have introduced them to each other?Geraldine Snell is one of those really great artists that not enough people know about because I feel she (I hope I’m fair in saying) has that particular mix of humility, egocentrism and conscientiousness which makes for great work but a hesitancy when it comes to exhibiting or  promoting it. I wanted to get her in to talk more about her work but soon realised, because much of her work is her writing or talking about her own experiences, I didn’t want to end up co-opting her content! So a section discussing her upcoming novella we’ve decided to hold back (you’ll just have to wait until it comes out); still, we were able to share our similar feelings in regards to wrestling with the perceived pretentiousness of becoming an artist, class-identity confusion, and making work on the internet. *cough* http://geraldinesnell.comI was also really fortunate to be able to speak with American artist and writer Tyler Coburn who was in Leeds as part of a Henry Moore Institute Fellowship which was nice to learn a bit about. I found the way he was able to view things quite analytically rather compelling, and when he spoke more personally even more so. I had been aware of certain works and writings of his, but had no real knowledge of how important his work as an art educator / adjunct professor was to him. In many ways I felt his relationship to art education mirrored a lot of my own experience, and found it really helpful to talk it over with him.
