As we slog wearily but hopefully through the last storm of winter and welcome the transition to spring, it’s a good time to reconsider the music of the singular Minnesota guitarist and composer STEVE TIBBETTS—a man who fully lives the life of an artist, while still being a responsible citizen, a compassionate family man, an entertaining storyteller, an international traveler to the mountains of Nepal and the jungles of Bali—and a serious, open-minded musician. As you might expect from someone with such broad and diverse experience, STEVE TIBBETTS’ music is multi-faceted, wide-ranging, and absolutely unique. He plays both electric and 12 string guitars in a non-standard tuning, and cites influences from jazz, rock, and world music, as well as his lifelong musical partner, percussionist MARK ANDERSON, and producer MANFRED EICHER of his longtime label ECM Records. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we focus on his more delicate and contemplative acoustic music, on "A STEVE TIBBETTS CELEBRATION." We'll feature selections from his 2022 ECM Anthology HELLBOUND TRAIN; from his 1984 ECM album SAFE JOURNEY; and from SELWA, his 2004 collaboration with Tibetan nun and singer CHÖYING DROLMA. In this 12th episode of the ECM podcast we’re joined by the acclaimed American guitarist and long-time ECM recording artist Steve Tibbetts, whose discography-spanning anthology „Hellbound Train“ was released in July 2022. The double album comprises music from eight albums recorded over 40 years, from as early as his debut for the label, Northern Song, from 1982.Steve explains the nature of this double-disc set and talks about his collaborators over the years, his influences as well as the tuning and sampling techniques that make his guitar playing so unique.

Steve Tibbetts's Hellbound Sound: The Echoes Podcast We ride a Hellbound Train with Steve Tibbetts. Among my friends and many musicians, Steve Tibbetts has been a legend since his second album, YR came out in 1980. And his first release was really good too. He’s released twelve albums in the last 40 years, eight of them on ECM Records. Each one has been a journey of the most unique world fusion including using Balinese percussion and rhythms. Steve Tibbetts: The double drumming style of Balinese gong kebyar is furious, wild punk rock, and immediately makes you think this would work well with a Marshall stack and a Telecaster. And so that’s what we did. Steve Tibbetts. He’s just released a double CD retrospective called Hellbound Train on ECM.
