Hand-washing is an easy way to prevent the spread of germs, but many people (even doctors!) aren’t doing it correctly. Samyak Shrimali created Sanjeevani, a system to solve this problem in hospitals. Sanjeevani combines sensors and a computer model to track whether health care workers wash their hands according to World Health Organization guidelines.

Young Innovator Samyak Shrimali, Oregon (USA) designed an automated multi-module system, called Sanjeevani, which can be deployed in hospitals to track healthcare workers’ hand hygiene compliance to tackle the major problem of hospital-acquired infections. Welcome to episode 30 of FTP! Today, we are joined by Samyak Shrimali, a rising sophomore from Oregon. He designed an automated realtime system, "Sanjeevani", which can be deployed in hospitals to track and enforce healthcare workers’ hand hygiene compliance, to curtail the significant problem of hospital-acquired infections. This is more important today than ever, as the world is facing the coronavirus pandemic and hospitals are in dire need of an automated system to enforce hand hygiene compliance. For his invention, he has received multiple national and international awards, including being named a Top 10 National Finalist in the 2019 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challange, getting selected at as a 2020 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) Finalist, and winning the bronze prize at the 2020 Inventions vs Corona International Contest.
