170: Jeff Flagg | Building Your Armor this Off-Season

I am really excited about having this gentlemen on the show so let’s not delay it any further. Introduction to Jeff Flagg This gentleman played baseball at Mississippi State University and was drafted by the New York Mets organization in 2008. Since that time, he was a 2 time All-star and in 2009 was named the Organizational Player of the Year. After deciding to end his professional baseball career in 2012, he returned to Mississippi State University and completed his degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology. He wasn’t content to leave athletics behind, He now competes as a long drive golfer. Last year, he won the 2014 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship in Las Vegas, NV. And I’m betting he’ll be returning this year to defend that title. I’d like to give a very warm GolferOnFire Welcome to Jeff Flagg! Getting to Know Jeff Flagg How long have you been playing golf and how did you first get introduced to the game? Grew up in the Tiger Woods era. I was around 11 or 12. What clubs are your bag? (ie. Brand, type, hybrid, etc)  I’m currently on the Callaway Kings of Distance Team. I do have more than just drivers in my bag. I carry a full set of 14. Do you have a favorite club that you go to when things on the golf course are going badly? If I had to pick it would be my 60 degree wedge. It goes back to my roots of hitting over tress in the yard. Who would be in your dream foursome? (What 3 other people would you like to play with. Alive or Dead.)  Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Warren Buffet. I like the trash talk that I think would happen between Tiger and Jordan and I could get my portfolio healthy talking to Buffet. Lightning Round  What is your current handicap if you had one? 7 What is the furthest you’ve hit a golf ball in and out of competition? Where were you? I was in Mesquite, NV &amp; hit a drive 463 Yards. What is your favorite golf course? Butler National Golf Club What is your favorite golf movie? Caddyshack  Long Drive Competition Is it easy for you to transition from the long drive game to a regular game of golf? It is hard to tone it down. It’s a “live by the sword, die by the sword” kind of thing. When the driver is working good it’s great and when it’s going wrong, it’s really bad. When did you first notice that you could hit it farther than most other golfers? I worked at a driving range in high school and the neighbors would call and say someone was hitting their house. I developed into a power hitter in baseball and it was suggested that I transfer it to golf. How long have you been competing in long drive competitions? How did you get started? 2 years. I went to my first local qualifying with hand me down clubs. Then I won the regionals and went into the top 32 at Mesquite. I wanted to see how I stacked up. I won it in my 2nd year. What is the one thing you wished you had learned earlier in your career? A couple of coaches with the Mets organization told me, control what you can control and let the rest sort itself out. 99% of your time is spent in the journey so you should enjoy it. Another thing I’ve heard is you’re never as good as you think you are and you’re never as bad as you think you are. What kind of training do you do…STRENGTH, FLEXIBILITY, MENTAL? After baseball, I worked for a company called Purmotion and was exposed to some really cool training philosophies. Training full range of motion. I don’t do a lot of stretching because if you are moving correctly while working out, that is a part of it. Killing The Ball Tip Everyone wants to know “The Secret” to hitting a golf ball longer. I don’t really believe in secrets, but I know there are certain parts of the swing you focus on to generate the clubhead speeds you guys do. Can you give the GolferOnFire.Com listeners a tip or two, to turning up the heat with their driver? The biggest tip I can give is somewhat counter-intuitive to what most instructors teach. One of the things that no one focuses on for the most part is arm speed. Most people focus on rotational speed of the hips. But, the bottom line is the faster you move your arms the faster your club head travels. You need a big arc with your arm swing and then use your right hand like you’re going to skip a rock across the water. When you skip a rock you aren’t thinking I need this much hip turn, and I’m rotating here…you just do it. One drill I do when we get off track. We address the ball with feet together and swing as hard as you can. Staying balanced. We really had fun with Jeff on the show. I hope you golf addicts liked it as much as I did!
