In the months and weeks leading up to America’s  entry into World War I, the United States was roiled by anger over an inequitable economy, labor unrest, the politics of immigration, a tendentious press and the anguishing questions of war and peace. Strong voices spoke out for and against sending troops to Europe. President Woodrow Wilson, reluctant to get into the war, felt his options were narrowing. Then the Russian czar was overthrown and, in an instant, Wilson and other American leaders came to believe that democracy was now on the march, and that it was the responsibility of the United States to protect and extend it. But how could democracy abroad be squared with Jim Crow at home and with the denial of the vote to most of the nation’s women? Americans misread events in Russia in 1917 and as a consequence, launched a century of interventionism – and they’ve continued to misread Russia ever since.

This is a special edition of Midday as NPR prepares to air live coverage of the news conference in Paris with President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump is sure to face questions about Russia and its meddling in the 2016 Presidential election. He has been largely out of the public eye since the release of his eldest son's now famous emails. The scope of Russia investigations in the House, the Senate, and with the special counsel continues to expand. Tom begins this hour with the Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, Will Englund. He?s an editor on the Washington Post Foreign Desk who oversees the paper?s Russia coverage, and the author of a book on Russia called ----March 1917: On the Brink of War and Revolution.----
