Episode 280: ‘Reimagine mining to improve people’s lives’, ft Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani

Our 200th podcast episode features Mark Cutifani, CEO of Anglo American, one of the world’s biggest mining companies. In April of next year, he will be stepping down after 9 years at the helm. We have the privilege of spending some time with Mark to understand more about his career, his thoughts, wisdom, and his perception of the future of the mining industry as we enter a new era. An episode not to be missed. KEY TAKEAWAYS  The best way to get to the next job is to do the current job well. Think about your career and plan. Maximize what you get out of your current and future roles. Be true to yourself, while supporting your people and building trust. When making tough decisions do the analysis, use your head, but if it does not feel right in your heart, don´t do it. Don´t avoid making decisions. Studies show that good leaders make twice as many decisions. Monitor how your decisions are turning out and fix anything that is wrong as quickly as possible. People want to be part of a purposeful organisation. Defining a purpose for your organization is an important aspect of successful leadership. Provide your general managers with the support to do their job well. They are the ones that directly manage 90% of your people. Mining has the smallest environmental footprint in the world with the largest economic benefit. Most people do not realise that. Miners are making a positive difference to the communities they work in, and most are striving hard to do even better. You can learn a huge amount from other sectors. Many of the recent mining efficiencies have come from outside the mining industry. There are seventy-six minerals in a smartphone. People simply do not realize how crucial mining is. Using wind, solar, hydropower, AI, and other tech, Anglo American will be carbon neutral by 2040. Anglo American conceived, designed, and launched their 300-tonne hydrogen truck in less time than it took Tesla to put their prototype on the road. Mining in a more precise and smarter way will greatly reduce energy consumption.
