​“Supply chain and procurement at a National Lab is so complicated–we do manufacture; we do R&amp;D we do maintain 42 square miles of facilities; we do have 12,000 employees using state-of-the-art technology... We kind of have it all, which is the problem.” Christine Hipp, Leader of ASM Center of Excellence at LANL, walks us through her life journey, and describes how she has climbed all the way up to “the Hill” to find herself a successful career at Los Alamos (LANL). In this episode, she also shares her personal experience with sustainability, digital transformation, and the challenges of sourcing and procuring for a national lab.

Episode 12 – Christine Hipp: Writing History and Creating Space for Opportunities

This week we’re talking anthologies, shockingly since we have our anthology live on Kickstarter now (Have you backed? No? You probably should. Just click here) with our good friend Christine Hipp. Christine came on to talk about her first anthology on this episode, and she’s back to talk about her new anthology, the MANthology, and everything she’s learned in the past year.   I can definitely sympathize with her more this year than during her last appearance since I’ve spent the previous 12 months figuring out my own anthology project. I didn’t want to rehash the same episode we did before, so this episode we did a top five list of things she learned from building three anthologies in 12 months.   Here are Christine’s 5 things she learned from editing three anthologies in the last year:  Trust your gut - I don't know what your gut is like, but mine tells me to do things like check in with creators, remind people about deadlines, and double check work for typos. About 90% of the time this turns out to be really good advice. Pad your schedule - People get sick, emails get lost, someone is always going to need an extension. Do yourself a favor and account for that in your project schedule so you don't have to stress out as much about getting to print on time.  Respect the Project Plan - Every time we start a new anthology we copy the project plan from the previous book. If contributors asking how to format a script or what size the pages should be, we can add that info that the project plan and know it won't be an issue for the next anthology.  The release party is where it's at - if you want people to buy your anthology tell them where they can get it, and make that event as appealing as possible with food, drinks, karaoke, and as many cool contributors as you have table space for. You can make fliers, post it on social media, and interview on podcasts (wink) to build hype, but the best results will always come from contributors telling their friends, family, and fans about this cool new book they worked on.   The theme is your foundation - It's how you convince contributors to join the project, it's how you'll sell your book to potential readers. It will also help you make other important decisions like what should go on the cover, what age group the book should target, and how tonally consistent the book will be.  That’s a great list. Everything on it is super important. I made my own top 5 list from what I learned from making my own anthology, Monsters and Other Scary Shit. Here is my top 5 list. There is some overlap, but that’s mostly because creating an anthology has a set of rules, just like everything else. You need to have the right group of collaborators. It’s not about finding people once you submit, you need to know at least a core group before you start. A certain percentage of people will drop out along the way. Originally had tons of interest. Of that interest 350 pages committed. Of that 220 pages came through. You are the leader. You need to set up the Facebook group, be on people about deadlines, and get everything together. It’s all on your shoulders to make sure it turns out right. Even though it’s a jam book, you have the vision. Give creators lots of time to deliver. If you aren’t paying people, you need to give them a lot of time to do the book, but you shouldn’t give them tons of extensions just because they are working for free. It devalues the work of everybody who was on time. Do all the cons. You have to go to so many cons and launch events to make sure your campaign is successful. It’s all about meeting people in person, and turning that into online sales. Here’s a little bonus tip for all of you out there as well. BONUS: You will never work with every artist you love in your career, so anthologies are a great way to work with friends and people you admire who you would never otherwise work with, either because they do the same job as you (i.e. they are also writers) or because they don’t work in your style. Top 5 things you need to know when creating an anthology with MANthology editor Christine HIpp

Today on theshow we have Christine Hipp and Mom. No, not her mom, the artist Mom. Mom isthe head of the Woman’s Creator League and the Ladybug Creator Group whichmeets every week at the Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach.  I had themon mostly because they are launching a new anthology featuring all womencreators and artists featuring women’s empowerment and helping women find theirvoice.  They don’thave a theme for the book, but both Christine and Mom told me that just bygiving women the mic they got amazing stuff you wouldn’t expect women to write,like a piece about pooping.  These aretwo young artists, but two amazing ones too. Not only are they finding theirway, but they have a good head on their shoulders about what makes a greatcomic.  The sidenote of why I wanted them on the program is because they found their “tribe”. Italk all the time about tribes and finding a group of people that arelike-minded. Sometimes those are Facebook groups. Sometimes they are friends.Sometimes they are a group of people that meet in the same location and havethe same goals.  Mom andChristine talked about how being in the Sketchy Bug group helped them find avoice and give them a way to express themselves. More so, it gave them thecourage to show their work even when it was hard.  One of thebig things we talked about was the Ira Glass quote. You know THE Ira Glassquote among all the amazing ones. The one that’s been animated dozens oftimes.   “Nobody tells this to people who arebeginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get intoit because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first coupleyears you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it haspotential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game,is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot ofpeople never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who dointeresting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’thave this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And ifyou are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know itsnormal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Putyourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is onlyby going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your workwill be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to dothis than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to takeawhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” Here’s thething with creative work, you have to do it. You have to do it even when youaren’t good. Having people you respect to help mold your journey is such ablessing, one that both Mom and Christine shared with me.  We alsotalked a lot about zines, and how much I love zine culture because it allowssuch a greater freedom of expression that standard comics. Even though I didn’tknow it at the time, Gherkin Boy was a very zine-y type of book influenced byDevon McMindes of Thigh Man.  We talkabout a past guest, Rachel Dukes, and how she is able to do a webcomic andprint zines out as well, and how much I admire the ability to do somethingavant guard and still find an audience.  What I loveabout zines is that there is no judgement. Everything is art in zines, so evenif you suck at drawing, you can be accepted into this weird little community.Even if you can’t draw, you can make something.  With zines,and anthologies too, there is also a much wider diversity of people. Inmainstream comics you get a lot of white, middle class, dudes. In zines youhave everybody. I love that. Mom said it had to do with the counterculturemovement of the 70s, and how zines were rebellion against the mainstreamculture that shunned women and minorities.  I don’t knowif that’s true, but it really sounded good.  I loved thelong ranging conversation we had, and I think you will too.
