Billy Leon Jenkins Jr. (born July 8, 1974 in Los Angeles, California) is a former professional American football defensive back in the National Football League. He played for the St. Louis Rams (1997–1999), the Denver Broncos (2000–2001), the Green Bay Packers (2001), and the Buffalo Bills (2002). He played in Super Bowl XXXIV for the Rams where he started at safety. After the 1999 season, the Rams traded Jenkins to the Denver Broncos for a fifth-round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.  He is an alumnus of Howard University. Billy Jenkins is a Pittsburgh-based writer and a 28-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he retired as a Sergeant Major. He is a City of Pittsburgh Firefighter with over 22 years of service. In 2015, he earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Chatham University. In addition to writing, Billy is an actor and has appeared on TV, in movies, and on stage.In this episode, we learn what drew Billy to service at the age of 17, about his 2003 deployment following 9-11, how a conversation over MREs (Meals, Ready-to-Eat) inspired him to pursue writing, and how his writings speak to the memory of his father and his own military experience. #20: The Punishing of Billy Jenkins

Billy Jenkins is a incredibly active dude. A Marine, an active reservist, and a firefighter, Billy is also a storyteller, finishing up his Creative Writing MFA with a focus in fiction at Chatham University. I met him at a reading organized by other Chatham MFA students called Word Circus which, if you haven’t been is really amazing. Not only do you hear from great local writers but the atmosphere is incredibly inspiring and positive. There is an open mic portion to each evening which always holds great surprises from students and non-students alike.  A small correction: the writer we discussed but couldn’t think of his name was JD Salinger. I KNOW I KNOW!! in the moment it just wasn’t coming to us. In this chat we talk about Billy’s background here in Pittsburgh, his military career, and what it’s been like channeling his life’s passion of storytelling into an intense academic program. This chat was really fun and I am so looking forward to what’s next for him!
