Besheer Mohamed, a software developer turned Senior Researcher at the preeminent Pew Research Center, joins us for this inaugural episode of American Muslim Project. As an expert on religious beliefs and practices in the United States with a special focus on religious minorities, he says American Muslims make up just over 1% of the U.S. population. Despite nearly half being born Stateside—many whose families have been here for generations—little to no good quantitative research on the Muslim community existed before 2007. Besheer walks us through the abundant amount of data garnered in the last 13 years at Pew, tackling the massive question of how to determine what’s essential to being Muslim (spoiler alert: It’s not necessarily a belief in God). Would you be surprised to learn that American Muslims feel a strong duty to protect the environment and fight for justice? That the percentage of Muslims in the U.S. actually increased after 9/11? Or that over one in ten consistently leans Republican? Perfecting the methodology in order to get manifold strangers to accurately open up about their religion, especially when variance abounds and Islamophobia looms large, is complex yet essential to Besheer’s success. His command of the nitty-gritty—the wording, question order, non-mutually-exclusive choices, etc.—plus the astute insight of polling experts (say, which size envelope and manner of addressing makes respondents more likely to act) renders each survey just so. Nonetheless, we ask what Pew has gotten wrong, and how having this data serves the greater good at all. From Besheer’s analyses we learn that human behavior and self-identification can sometimes be at odds. We consider, perhaps for the first time, how African-American Muslims may be doubly criminalized (both racially and religiously).
